Jhabail is the name of one of the last of a handful of fishing communities still practicing an ancient mode of living on the banks of the river Chenab in Punjab, Pakistan. The community’s way of life, in danger due to the overexploitation and diversion of waters to canals upstream, is a fragile balance between these and the powerful forces of tradition and nature.
The film deals poetically with, and is structured around the rhythms and moods of the fishermen’s day with its toil of preparation and catching the fish, travel towards loved ones, and their culmination in rituals of celebration of survival and Jhabails’ authentic way of life.
Film directed by Aun Raza & Danyal Rasheed
