A breakdown of my equipment and how I use it for documentary shooting.

***A note about what I say at 1:50. I DO monitor the sound out of the H4n whenever possible; I'll shoot while wearing my shoulder bag, the Zoom will be in there recording, and I'll have headphones on and plugged in. But in some situations you can't tote around the bag and wear big headphones (read: when it's time to be low-key). It's in these situations that tossing a wireless transmitter on the shotgun mic comes in handy: I can leave the H4n recording in the bag and put the bag down. Just gotta be careful: you have to set your audio recording levels on the Zoom in advance, you have to know what your battery levels are, and you have to mind the distance you create between your transmitters and receivers (so as to ensure a clear signal).

It's during these times (oh, and while syncing sound in post) that I dream of the Canon XF105....
