A video work from my 2nd year at Newcastle university in 2002. Made up of clips from sci-fi, horror and B-movies, Instant Death attempts to accumulate moments of fictional death and the time frame surrounding these. A moment in time where someone is between life and death. The transitionary period of 'is and is not'. In film death scenes are usually the opportunity for directors to really push their creativity, budgets and peak entertainment levels. It's the 'money shot'. Containing scenes of threat, peril, comedy and impending doom and set to the track of the same title from the album Hello Nasty by the Beastie Boys, the characters in the clips are shown in one of three ways; either at the instant of death or dieing instantly, or that the plight of some is so agonising that they yearn for an 'instant death', to be relieved from their misery. There are some glimpses of narrative in the film but first and foremost this is an experimental work, made during my early days as a student, whose main drive was to seek out and explore a language. In this case; the language of movie sci-horror.
