Il Poggione is situated at the Southern end of the Montalcino zone on the Maremma slopes of the hills between Montalcino and Sant' Angelo.
The vineyards of Tenuta Il Poggione, which are all south-facing and at an altitude of 200-400m above sea level, extend over 100 hectares, 60 of which are used for the production of Brunello. After all, you have to leave some space for olive trees, no matter how good your Brunello is.
The Francheschi family have owned this land since 1890 before brunello was known. It was in 1958 that they employed Pierluigi Talenti and the quality of Il Poggione went to world class levels. From the the 1965 Il Poggione release until his death in 1999, Talenti created a Brunello to match or surpass all others. Today it is his protégé for over 20 years, Fabrizio Bindocci, who carries the torch of quality.
The work goes on to protect the typicity and quality of Il Poggione’s wines. The Riserva is only made in the best years and constant reductions in production ensure that quality is never a problem even if quantity is. Still, it explains why these wines enjoy such a strong following, great vineyard sites and great attention to detail are always a winning combination.
