Northeast Historic Film: "Herrings To-Day, Sardines To-Morrow." Herring were trapped by weirs, lifted by round dipnets into dories and then shoveled into a sardine carrier, where they were salted and tossed down a "flume" into the hold. They had to be "turned into" sardines at a factory within 24 hours as they spoiled quickly, so the step from herring to sardine was a quick one. Twenty years earlier than this summer day, there were sixty-eight weirs in the Bagaduce region. In the 1900's an industrial process was developed to turn the slurry of fish scales on the "flumes" into a pearly coating for plastic beads - and fake pearls were borne. Sardine men of the midcentury knew that Queen Elizabeth was crowned while wearing a necklace made of sardine scales. Transfer your home movies at: ww.oldfilm.org
