Joseph has come back from his travels in the Tana Delta and Western Province's sugar belt. He has four main conclusions: 1. The pastoralists of the Tana Delta will be severely affected by the sugar project; 2. Sugar farming in Western has not brought all the benefits the people hoped and many sugar farmers struggle with poverty; 3. The Tana Delta is the only water source for miles around - sugar cane would significantly reduce water availability to many water users in the Delta and 4. Sugar production could be easily improved in Western Province - if sugar self-sufficiency is so important in Kenya, why hasn't this been done? Mumias Sugar, TARDA and NEMA all declined to comment.
