Thanks for the <3. The film's still in development but I'm aiming to have it ready for halloween 2010. Hard work though but I'm getting a big boost in confidence since posting on Vimeo.

Oh, Dean...you don't need a confidence boost. All you need is a reminder. Because, Dean, life is like iced-tea....it's not the sugar that makes it sweet....it's the stirring.

Dean, you got the sugar, baby!! Do you hear me!?!?!

    YOU.GOT. DA. SUGAR!!!

Now go and stir!!! Stir it 'til it's sweet!!

You know you got it, you know you want it, you know it's time!!!

    Dean, somethings should stay buried...

...but for crying out loud, NOT THIS DREAM OF YOURS!!!

Well? You just gonna sit there and read this like it's all Chinese to you?!?!

    Go, Dean! GO GO GO!

    :-)

I was wondering, how independent is independent in this case? Do you have budget and do you have a crew?

Wow! So, what you're saying here is that when we both discussed which major subjects we would take at Uni, I should have agreed with you to go into computer animation instead of opting for radio drama.

I stand by my decision. I'm sure there'll be a revival of my outdated tape editing skills someday. Please...

    Show off! ;-)

Seriously, this is exceptionally smoothly done. Be interesting to see how it develops.
  • Dean Yurke plus 8 months ago
But you were right though, VFX are way quicker to do for radio and almost a third cheaper.

Hi Dean, Thanks for sharing the video, some great editing, it looks very well done, I have added it to the group, trailers and teasers don't make the channel it has to be complete pieces only. Happy to review your when it's done. Carry on you are doing a fantastic job, best wishes Mark

Simply put, I want to see more! You got me. This is definitely your trailer. Nice! What camera did you use for this? Lens? Adapter? etc.
  • Dean Yurke plus 7 months ago
Thanks OneClick really appreciate the comment. I'm going to lie and say a combination of 35mm film and the Red One.

Okay, now no one's listening, it was all shot with an HVX200 with the Brevis lens adapter and a Nikon 18mm AI prime lens.

Kind of ironic that all the shots are super wide but the adapter still brings a sense of depth and gives a slight promist quality.

wow, Dean...i love the feeling of this. this one's on my list now, for sure. can't believe there's no VFX...you're definately getting the most out of the camera you're using, which is.....?
  • Dean Yurke plus 7 months ago
    Fantastic, thanks Chris!
Okay there was a little bit of VFX, the mine, leaves, crows, sticks, smoke, sunrise and the collapsing earth were Visual Effects, so I'm afraid I was lying to Xavier earlier ; ) (he'll forgive me though)
I used the HVX200 a brevis lens adapter and Nikon prime lenses, mostly an 18mm to capture the massive redwoods. send me your email and I'll add you to our mailing list for updates - dean@yurke.com
Thanks again Chris, it's great to get such positive feedback really spurs me on to get it finished.

is this red one or hvx 200? it's nice, i like the creep on the groud, wat'd you use for stabiliser there?

Big in Japan on my videos is Red one and has some VFX, watch it if you please. If not i'll subscribe for the trailer. Good luck with it all matey.
  • Dean Yurke plus 7 months ago
Hi Andrew, I used an HVX with a Brevis 35mm adapter. I love the look of the brevis, kind of scatters the light as well as gives us the shallow depth of field we all love. Even the noise of the HVX helps with the film look too, feels like grain.

Big in Japan was cool, the main actor was fantastic. Love Aussie films, big fan of Peter Weir. Send me your email and I'll add you to the list. Thanks Bluey : )

Great work, as everyone seems to agree. It made me think of what we tried to do in the beginning of Evil Dead, building up both a sense of dread and primal power. We wanted to do more things with the trees and were limited at the time. You've done with FX things we would have loved to do. Sam Raimi would love to see this.
  • Dean Yurke plus 6 months ago
Wow Tim! That is such a huge compliment. I'm in awe. I can't imagine what you guys would've done if this technology was around back then.

Thank you so much for your comment : ) Made my day!

  • Eddie O'KEEFE 4 months ago
Really great work! I'm hoping to use an HVX with a 35mm adapter for my next project. Any advice for a beginner?
  • Dean Yurke plus 4 months ago
Thanks Eddie. There's lots of adapters to choose from, all have their pros and cons. I personally chose the Brevis since I'm filming in dark places and wanted less light loss. I prefer the look of the M2 but it eats 2+ stops. The Brevis is less than a stop.

I also like that I can use the Brevis without rails so I can attach it to a glidecam, indislider or Kessler crane without all of the extra weight.

One disadvantage of the Brevis is that it's a vibrating ground glass as opposed to the spinning ground glass of the M2. At higher shutter speeds the grain of the glass becomes more visible. So if you're going for that Gladiator / Private Ryan staccato look then you'd be better off with an M2 or equivalent.

If you don't need 24p then I'd go for the Canon 5d Mark 2.

    Dean.

WOW. Incredibly impressive & cinematic. When will it be done, you got me hooked!
  •
  • You got me curious now, VFX moslty done on an Inferno; you do have access to some serious equipment ! I spent three years developing this software a while back. I was working mostly on the underpinning of the application, brought in the mix-resolution capabilities, resizing module and other things. It is an awesome software. I however changed company. I don't know where there are right now, the competition is very fierce but Discreet (now Autodesk M&E) is making some terrific software and I think Inferno is still on the top !

All that to say you created some nice VFX in this Intro. It looks really great !
  • Dean Yurke plus 4 months ago
Thanks Patrick! Yeah, love the inferno thanks for implementing the resolution independence that was a huge deal. I'm currently doing a job in Nuke, it's pretty cool in that it's got 3D capabilities and it's a similar logic to Discreet, and compared to Shake it's a joy! Still Inferno is hands down the best tool for FX design!
