Digital Derby: Auto Raceway (Gameplay)
Gameplay of Digital Derby: Auto Raceway.
Electromechanical game manufactured by Tomy in 1978 that was one of several mechanical games marketed as "digital" to compete against the proliferation of LED-based games. An interesting tidbit from the history of handheld games from the split second era when building an intricate mechanical game was less expensive than building an electronic equivalent.
Digital Derby game graphics are displayed on film strips that mechanically scroll vertically, and the game logic (collision detection) is encoded as hole punches at the edge of the the film stock. Score is kept on a mechanical odometer.
