A short little impression on the new GY-HM700. Some interesting features on this new Shoulder Camcorder 1/3rd inch 3 x CCDs Progressive with JVC patented focus assist and well as 35mbits VBR. The worlds Fastest Shoot to Edit Camcorder today only for FCP users. Take note this is only for FCP not FCE not iMovie. There is so much more what this cam offers but lets face it i only have 500 mbytes on Vimeo so hope you enjoy the video done in a rush. The HM700 is a pre production model and special thanks go to Roger of Reel Motion HD for filming here as well as LSV Enterprise and JVC Singapore for the loan of the camcorder.

Shoots in a variety of HD format 60i, 30i, 50i,30,25,24p all roled into one sexy camcorder.

Nice camera, thanks Derek! I think it is likely that Edius and Vegas will support this before too long. Especially Edius which is usually pretty good for multi-format support.

yes richard...i hope so too, cos the little one is tempting if it provides the option for the seamless workflow on edius and the other NLEs. However, you may want to buy the XD Decode as suggested???

Woah the focus assist is cool. Much easier to use than the peaking mode. The format is quite a hassle thou.. squarely targeted at FCP users. Interestingly I heard the price is about 9k region, similar to EX1 but it will be a tough choice.

Just for clarification (because there is much confusion and misinformation on the net about the HM series cameras) the .mov files generated by the HM700 can be used in almost any Quicktime based application on a mac if you download and install the free open-source XDCAM EX quicktime component from blog.lib.umn.edu/mcfa0086/discretecosine/164630.html

PC users can use these Quicktime MOV files if they buy and install Calibrated{Q} Software's XD Decode XDCAM component for Quicktime.
    calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp

If the optional KA-MR100 SxS recording unit is attached to the HM700 you can also record in the MP4 wrapper to either SxS or SDHC (or both simultaneously.) This means that any workflow compatible with Sony's EX1 or EX3 will work with the HM700 or HM100 on either platform.

Also, the HM700 DOES NOT shoot NTSC or PAL, but it can downconvert to either via the HD/SD-HDI, composite or component outputs, or the firewire port (as DV stream in NTSC or PAL.)

Everything you ever wanted to know about the HM700 is here:
    dvinfo.net/conf/jvc-gy-hm-series-camera-systems/

And my first review is here:

Thanks Tim but the HM700 as stated clearly is a pre production model and yes you are right, MAC users who do not own FCP can download the QT component at the link to play the .MOV files if they don't have FCP on their MAC system.

You are also right that XD Decode has to be purchased in order to play the files on PC based QT and also render these files editable on PC based NLEs. I actually DL a demo version already and tried dragging the files into SONY VEGAS but since it is DEMO the middle portion is masked.

As curiosity however, files i have shot in the MP4 wrapper from the HM100 unit i have now unwrapped into .MXF however is giving me issues in AUDIO. You may like to DL the file and tell me what you think or have any experience on this?

As for not being able to shoot in NTSC and PAL i am puzzled cos the camcorder i tested shoots 60,30,50,25.24 etc...

And when i set the camcorder is set indoors to the 60 and 30, the flickering is clearly evident with the different power source we have here.

As for optional unit, i am told by local JVC guy that this will still be locked even if the KA-MR100SXS unit is attached. I cannot confirm this though my question posed to him is exactly that fact that i thought that MP4 wrapper would be unlocked on the installation of this unit. They however did not have a unit to put to test.

Thanks Tim, for putting the info and links here. I would think that people who watch this video and know what a HM700 stands for would know what DVinfo is. Glad that u have a nice review there too, its good to know that there are capable hands to introduce all these new equipment to us.

I am supportive of what VideoCobra does, as he's the only few people in this region doing such reviews. Looking at how you posted the comment, I get the feeling that you're making it rather impersonal and judgmental. Of course he knows 60i from 50i, but here, the colloquial term is still PAL / NTSC. Fit the jargon to suit the audience.

Besides, I have the impression that both the cams used for reviews are pre-production models, so i guess we wouldn't know much of the finer details for sure right?

    cheers

Refering to Tim Dashwood post above, i believe what Tim is trying to say is that HD cams do not shoot in PAL or NTSC formats as in the case in SD world. So, for a matter of clarification, for those who were misinformed by my video, i humbly apologize. These are all now referred to as HD formats. I have change the description calling these HD formats now so that i do not misinform and confuse.
