On Saturday, a paintball reenactment of the Invasion of Normandy was held in Wyandotte, Oklahoma; just twenty-five miles from Joplin Missouri. About a thousand players participated from twenty-seven countries and the immediate region. They included veterans and some active military on leave. The minister who opened the game was from Joplin. He had come over between funerals to escape the hysteria and serve as referee at the Utah landing. I filmed in Joplin Sunday morning, recording the air space as I drove through, which was filled with broadcasts from local church services. When visually unpacked, these events reflect a cultural undercurrent of tension and heightened preparedness.
