The early settlers came to the Oxford Hills area of Maine to farm. But they also found Mount Mica, a rough crescent running from Stoneham through Greenwood and West Paris to Minot, where there are large deposits of Pegmatite with pockets holding tourmaline, amethyst, beryl, quartz, and much more.
