Production Company : Underground Planet

I got a message from Chris Lowe, bass player for Dexter Freebish, saying that the band was putting out a greatest hits album that included some new tracks and that they were interested in making a vid. As someone who, like most, loved their tune “Leaving Town" I couldn't help to be a bit giddy!

Up till now I've always stayed away from doing an all black and white video. To be honest I guess I've just seen too many bad YouTube vids that have employed this technique or similarly, a film look filter, as a kind of short cut or crutch in an attempt to make a video appear "artistic". Not that it's never done effectively or even to imply that I used it well for that matter! Just to say that I was never willing to go there. That said, listening to this song a hundred times or more while trying to visualize a performance piece … I never saw it in color.

We started setting up for the shoot at 6 PM on Sunday evening, broke down at around midnight and the video went live that Tuesday before midnight in all it’s full black and white glory. Thanks to the band for letting me go this route not to mention being so awesome during the shoot and having a great song to work with! Kyle, Scott, Chris, Rob, you guys rock, nuff said.

    Ray,

I am Blown AWAY!!! When my wife saw the first 50 second cut of the video you sent out the day after shooting she said "This video actually makes me like the song. I have butterflies in my stomach." The reason that she had this reaction is that you were not only able to meet the song where it was in a purely sonic form but elevate it to the level that it "Belonged." You perfectly captured the spirit and intensity of the song in a way that brought back the excitement that we had when we wrote it.

    Thank you.....Thank you....Thank you!!!

Hey man...no denying the power of this video...stays fresh all the way through and really captures something beyond the track itself.....true depth.

Yeah I really like the way it was limbo shot. Did you pretty much have most of your shots scripted out? BTW, liked the song so much bought it off itunes.

Thanks again! We did about twenty takes in all. Some of the positions I had in my head going into it others were more organic and came about on the set. The racks weren't necessarily scripted per se but I knew the song well enough that I kinda knew where I was going. I was pretty tickled because right after the first "practice" take I played it back for the band (it was one of the shots with Kyle in the forefront) and Rob their drummer said "Wow, that's awesome the way you change the focus to where the action is" and Kyle the singer said "He knows the song by heart already, I can see him singing out of the corner of my eye". Glad I had done my homework. =)

Yes, the foreground / background shots were awesome. There's many questions I'd like to ask but I don't want to be a pain.....so I'll ask anyway! I just bought an EX-1 so I'd be interested to know if you used a PP for that shoot? Also, I really noticed the great lighting scheme you had for all this and looking at the still pics taken from that shoot did you use those energy efficient curl lights for part of your lighting?

No worries man, ask all ya want. I usually us a pretty flat PP that I stole from somewhere on the dv.info site and modified a bit. I prefer to do most of my tweaking in post and find that keeping the PP pretty basic gives more latitude in that regard. The lighting was, in a word, haphazard. I have a Lowel kit that I've used forever and the big ones were just some stage cans that the band had. You can also see the couple florescents bulbs dangling from bare sockets for some of the close ups. The lights were staggered along both sides. For the most part they were pointed straight across to keep the guys lit but off the floor and some were more angled towards the camera for back lighting. We used some black foil on a few also to shape the light as we needed. Since the walls were white, one of the tricks was to get the talent super bright so that I could stop down the camera and hide most of the walls and get that whole "limbo" thing.

Hey thanks man. I did notice the bare lights and I tried some of those type of lights but the ones I have emit to much noise that would definitely be picked up in an interview situation. Looking at the still pic of the lead singer I can see you indeed had that lit big time. Did you ever have to use any db gain on any of your setups?
