Made for CVP TV. Philip Bloom takes a look at the brand new shoulder mounted HD camcorder from JVC that shoots straight onto SD cards.

Filmed, edited, presented and directed by Philip Bloom. Letus Elite photography by Dennis Lennie. Behind the scenes photography by Mark Dawson.

Even though I will never buy a camcorder like this I very much appreciated the clarity and balance of your review - both in verbal and optical terms. Thank you for this - great work all the team.

For the features, I feel the price of the camera is too high. The SDHC media factor is awesome, but the Sony EX cameras can be adapted to use SDHC cards. It just seems like for the money, there are a few better options. It's nice to hear an honest review.

Thanks for an honest review, real shame about the interval record though.
I shot with the 110 and found the final cut intergration a real headache, glad to see they have fixed this problem.

  • Philip, you've made another great review video. I think the best part about this camera is that you can actually change out the lens and with good ones too unlike the majority of cameras in its class. I look forward to using a camera like this in the future that uses the SDHC cards. Although, I'm still partial to using tape (DVCPROHD) so I have a physical copy--my harddrives never last. Cheers.

hard to adjust, but when you do, going back to tape is horrible!

Nice looking camera but for some reason I still don't like JVC images, shame, love the formfactor.
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
really, i love the JVC image, love my JVC HD201

Hmm, guess I gotto check out the 200, used to own a JVC Ky950. At the time it was the rolls royce of Plumbicon cams, the only other "king" at the time was the Ikegami 79e. (omg 1988...) So used to be a JVC fan until they went "chippie" Tried them all until the HD100 and then gave up.

Prejudice and old age I guess, that and the EX-3 spoiled me (despite the fact it got some weird lens software bug)

There seemed to be a fair amount of purple fringing on the high contrast areas of the image with the fujinon lens
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
yes there is, this is not the lens that will ship with the camera as mentioned in the review

Im not a huge Jvc fan , but i think they may be on to something here. The funny thing is in the proper light the hv30 can give just as nice image as the jvc, or the sony in that high end price range. Although you do need a dof adapter to get the same dof as with this lens. And how much would it be to buy another lens for this cam , im guessing around 12,000 plus. It;s not a great cam for indie producers, but for broadcast ,it's great. if you can afford it, or if your Phillip bloom and get them for free. Either way, i wont be looking to get one. Canon is the way to go for low price good image. the hfs 10 will be better in the correct light. and for a fraction of the price.

I noticed the fringing too but the biggest thing I noticed was that it doesn't record into mp4 without the sxs accessory.
Does this mean there is no native quicktime recording without the sxs accessory?
seems weird when the lower model, the 1/4" chip hm-100 is sdhc only and records to quicktime.
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
no...you misunderstand, it records in .mov quicktime without the SxS. With the SxS you can wrap it in a .mp4 wrapper so other edit systems can see it.
  • Nevin Styre 8 months ago
ah, that makes sense. One of the great things about this camera is instant FCP editing so I was worried there for a second they would make you pay extra to get it.

whats up with the achromatic lens?! cheap...
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
yes, it is not the best lens
  •
  • Is there any way to get rid of the colored edges on the footage??

Thanks for this review. The images look great and your opinion seems well founded. I've been eyeing this camera mainly because of the Quicktime format. Good job.

Philip, thanks for the review, gave some good insights, I just might buy it.
Have you tested JVC's relay lens with PL mount lenses?

I am curious what the results would be using the JVC 2/3" adaptor and a SD 2/3 newsgathering lens ? I only am concerned with the image in the center and don't mind edge issues.

Also, is the CCD better for fast motion versus the CMOS, I never shoot in dark settings.
    Thanks

Very nice Phillip..............I own a panasonic ag dvc20p, and have only a 1/6" 3 ccd's.............I try but cannot achieve that, clean picture such as you have presented in this video on the HM700..............Do tell me, what your thoughts are on the size of the ccd and how that makes a more pro video..........I do know that they make a 1" 3 ccd, but God, it must cost alot............any cam you would suggest in the 4 to 5k range which would produce better videos than my ag dvc20p?
    Thanks;
    Tim from sunny Orlando Florida........
