Like a one-man-band or a vaudeville plate spinner, I play a variety of modified film projectors, tape players, vcrs, toys, and turntables as instruments, performing a irreproducible live screening and score. I am trying to enact just enough obstruction to change the film, but not enough to destroy it. The film is changing color, the sound is getting weird and the picture is stopping, jumping, stuttering and cycling from representation to abstraction. My film performances are about tempting failure, suspense, and encouraging critical spectatorship. The typical workday of a film projectionist is all about avoiding failure and achieving invisibility. If you go see a movie and become aware that there is a projectionist behind the scenes, it is because something went wrong. A part of the “magic” cinema is that the audience forgets about the technical construction and apparatus of film (and the power structure behind it) and just sees the story. I hope to break that spell.
