Prior to contact, the parable of Aak’wtaatseen was told so people could learn how
to properly clean and take care of the materials needed to prepare and preserve
salmon. Then, in the mid-1920s, the Alaska Native Sisterhood created a bylaw,
whereby children attending government schools were expected to be well-dressed
and clean, according to Western standards.
