A stack of petitions and a host of comments on the necessity and prudence of a ban/moratorium on hydrofracking -- these things the Vestal Town Board faced tonight. After regular business was transacted, during the public comments section of the meeting, Sue Rapp of Vestal Residents for Safe Energy (VeRSE) presented 1000 signatures on a petition supporting an ordinance prohibiting gas drilling within the Town's borders. Several residents spoke in favor of the measure, as they cited health reasons and even economic reasons. Some even suggesed that when gas prices rise and technology improves, they might feel differently, but for now a prohibition is the safest course.
