Designers have struggled for years to establish the value of their work to those outside the design profession. In recent years, increasing empirical evidence is being amassed on the value of design, but the challenge remains of selling specific designs or design features, design processes, or investments in design talent to non-design managers. In this session, we briefly review empirical evidence amassed to date on the value of design, discuss some management tools for assessing value and how designers might use them, and propose alternative ways of showing senior management the value of design.
