47. Arizona Cactus - Letus Extreme Film
For more info and blogs, check out tomguilmette.com

I am visiting my sister and her husband in Tucson, Arizona. I will be working on a job later this week, but in the meantime, I am running around the desert shooting the crazy stuff that grows here. We do not have spiky cactus in New England!

I am using the Sony PMW-EX1 with the Letus Extreme. I have my trusty Vinten Vision 3 lightweight carbon fiber tripod and my bag of Nikon Nikkor manual lenses.

I checked out the Catalina Highway where the Saguaro cactus grow up to thirty feet high! They reach toward the sun and this time of year, the sun is very comfortable and the temperatures are very mild. The wind was very strong and I had trouble using my telephoto lenses because of shake and wobble. I recorded some sound of the natural windy environment and incorporated it into the film.

I almost stepped on a rattle snake while carrying my kit and found that wondering around the desert underbrush in shorts is not a great idea.

I wish I had my mountain bike out here, there is fast single track everywhere.

Great shots tome, love the colors.

I was just waiting for Bon Jovi to pop out from behind a cactus and start singing a song from Young Guns II soundtrack.

Like it ! Tom you did a beautiful shot. You did a bit of color correction in the scene with the red flower and the catcus in the background, You graded the sky with a blue filter.
I especially like the scene at 1:25-1:28 Because there's a special movement of the camera. How do you do it?
  • Tomasz Chrzanowski 9 months ago
Heh I was about to ask of that movement, is it done in postprocessing or you got some equipment to do it so smooth?
    Great work, colors and shooting.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 9 months ago
fisheye lens 16mm f2.8 full wide. then i dragged the entire camera system over the cactus like a jib and dutched the shot as i pulled the camera towards my body. all shot at 60 frames per second, so it looks even smoother.

thanks for the comments! wish i had my real jib out here...

Very inspiring! How long did it take you to make?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 9 months ago
shot in desert for two hours, just focusing on the saguaro and other cactus. i edited that night for about an hour and color graded for about another half hour... then encoding and uploading to web.

so not including encoding and uploading... about 3.5 hours start to finish!

  • Tom Guilmette plus 9 months ago
buy the sony pmw-ex1. excellent camera. the sxs cards are very reliable. i shoot for major clients like discovery and espn with no problems at all. (knock on wood!)

I grew up in Tucson, and I have always thought the desert has a particular beauty to it. You've captured it very well. I'm new to vimeo and this is one of the first videos I've watched. I'm studying film right now with an emphasis in documentary. What doc are you shooting in Tucson?

I follow your blog and was excited to hear you were coming to my state. You have really done an excellent job on the two AZ projects I have seen thus far. You are here at peak time as it is only going to get warmer then incredibly hot. Being a native here I often forget the beauty in my own back yard. Maybe I'll goto New England soon to shoot your backyard. Enjoy your stay!

Too bad, you would have done a gret job on that one. I have watched a number of your videos and think they are top notch! Have you done any formal training in videography or are you self taught? Looks like a great job. I liked your chroma living room. It made me laugh. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Take care,John

Ah, you got me on two counts ... great scenery, and I tend toward a touch of saturation. Nice work. Now head for the hills ... the Sedona hills that is. You will love the color at sunset!

Looks like you got yourself into a prickly situation with this one Tom. Luckily I was drinking a beer whilst I was watching this. The desert can make ya pretty parched. We dont get to many cactus in Western Australia but we do get Spinafex up north which is like a small ball of needles and it is very painful to walk through. No Rattlers either just the odd King Brown which is the most venomous snake in the world.

Thanks for posting Tom. P.s. What are your thoughts on the Red Scarlet.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 8 months ago
    thanks michael.

my thoughts on the red scarlet are this: i want one....
but may buy a full sized xdcam with a real lens first. we shall see.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 8 months ago
It looks like it will be a very desirable piece of kit. I want one also but my wife may have another thing to say about that. Stuck with the 5D mk2 and XHA1 + Letus for now.

    Happy shooting.

Very cool!! I grew up in Tucson....you made me miss it for sure! And a bit of trivia if you return....the red flowers on the end of the Ocotillo...the long spin like plants....you can pull each flower off and then suck on the them...its like a sugar treat in the wild!!

    Thanks again!!
