Tyumen region, Yamal, Russia.
In the end of each year reindeer-breeders carry out the slaughtering of reindeers to get winter stock of meat, make new warm cloths and to have some money to buy snow tractors and portable generators. They run their herds hundreds kilometers to slaughterhouse to calculate and sort animals. Part of reindeers is remained and another part is slaughtered. Slaughtering season is up to one month depending on how many reindeers delivered. To deal with 2000 animals herd takes 1-2 days.Nevertheless Yamal is very reach region full of "gas rubles", only very few slaughtering stations use more or less civilized methods of slaughtering. More often this process is the same as hundreds years ago : 15-20 animals are penned one by one in enclosure where breeders decide who will be remained alive and who slaughtered... Blood on the snow, whole and cut carcasses, flayed hides... Smell of death over this "North corrida" throws reindeers into horror and rage. Sometimes breeders leave the place with broken ribs, hands or legs like matadors. But despite of such dangers and job heaviness, the atmosphere of savage and uproarious gaiety is everywhere around.
