Here's a short piece I shot at my friend Ben's house, inspired by some music he had been working on. The music in this video is the first one he showed me and instantly knew I had to start shooting.

So none of this was scripted? That's fantastic.
  • Jeremy Hildebrant 2 years ago
    Thanks Tom!
Yeah completely unscripted, I was fortunate enough to have a camera with me. There was some direction on the fly of course, but pretty much just followed him around.

Awesome spur of the moment shoot. May I ask what music that is ... does your friend Ben have his music online or for sale?
  • Jeremy Hildebrant 2 years ago
Ben has a huge catalog of music, stuff that he does just by himself and projects that he has worked on with various friends. They range from all styles and emotions. He even played in punk rock band of mine in the late 90's. The music he does on his own is the best in my opinion, perfect for visuals like this. I don't think any of his personal stuff is online, although you can find some of the collaborative project stuff in the itunes music store. (Rad Scientist, Soft Location)

if you dont mind me asking, how did you get that sort of stop action feel? was it more or less just quick cuts and sped up film? this was pretty cool
  • Jeremy Hildebrant 2 years ago
Individual still frames shot with a dslr. Anywhere from 4 fps to 1 fps.

This is stunning. I love it for a lot of reasons, but particularly awesome is the way it portrays the independent spirit of art. This wasn't shot at a recording studio, but the musician's house where he was recording on his Mac. You didn't make this video as part of a big production house, but you made it yourself too. Beautifully portrayed. Powerful stuff. I hope to have something this nice someday.

Thanks Caleb, my feeling exactly! I am a commercial still photographer by profession and am completely exhausted by how overproduced, manufactured, and nitpicked projects become. I am trying to be much more unrefined in my personal work!

Well, that would explain why you have a 5D Mark II then. :P

I also didn't realize this was composed of stills. That makes the effort even more impressive. Is there a "quick" way to compose the photos into video using Final Cut? I've been dreaming of composing something made of stills for a while. I recently entered the DSLR world with a Rebel XSi, which has been a joy for me having graduated from a capable Canon G3. If you have any tips on how you edited this, I'd really love to hear them.

Nice one. Were the motion fx done in camera or did you do it in post when you desaturated it. Nice grade btw. Which post fx software did you use? AE?

I wish I owned an knew how to use After Effects. I'm still trying to figure out FCE. : ) No post special effects here, shot still frames in black&white, minor tone adjustments in Lightroom.

    AMAZING!
Must have been a bit hard.. i mean how many stills does your camera take continously? What im trying to say is when ever the limit of 4fps stills where shot...what? you just waited for them to be recorded and kept on going, or did you tell your friend to stop for a sec and then continue? OMG i hope you understand what im trying to ask haha
What did you use to put all the stills toghether as a video?

Thanks for sharing this fantastic work. Can I ask: What Dslr did you shoot on, and also did you shoot large Jpegs or smaller sizes in order to achieve a longer frame burst? Also is it the same lens (prime?) and aperture throughout or did you let some auto functions on the camera kick in?
  • Jeremy Hildebrant 2 years ago
5D MK2. 50mm. Aperture Priority. Shot pretty wide open.
