James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award Address
"Improving the Lives of Others Through Goal Setting"

Goal setting theory, developed with Edwin Locke, has been the framework for developing predictors as well as interventions for selecting, appraising, training, and motivating employees ranging from relatively uneducated pulpwood producers to engineers/scientists. Specifically, I will address the development of the situational interview, based on the premise that intentions predict behavior; Behavioral Observation Scales for assessing job performance; training in self management for increasing job attendance; and the setting of conscious as well as subconscious goals for improving productivity.
