The headline event of Merge2012 is an orchestral concert in Hull City Hall.
we found some local songs that had been handed down over the generations and finally written down in the 1960s and 1980s. Now arranged for an orchestra, they'll be performed in the region's premier concert venue.
Merge aims to bring people together from all across the city and region, and from across different artforms – so the second half of the concert features a piece of music which is perfect for us. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in D Minor has an overriding theme of brotherly love and harmony, which has led to it being used as the anthem of the European Union. It is widely regarded as among the greatest works of one of the greatest composers.
We're creating our own orchestra and choir specially: the Humberside Festival Orchestra and Chorus.
Merge @ Hull City Hall, with its hands-on educational experience and diversity of participants, exemplifies everything Merge stands for.
Merge2012 is supported by Hull History Centre, Hull City Council and the University of Hull's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
