Our company shoots a good amount of VFX based commercials, so we were looking for a good camera solution for VFX tests and element shoots. We primarily shoot on an Alexa, but it's not always available or affordable for smaller projects. When I saw the Canon Sponsored XXIT by Sam Nicholson at Stargate Studios, I was impressed with the fantastic keying capabilities of this relatively inexpensive camera.. The folks at Canon put me in touch with Sam who was very eager to give me notes on keying with this camera (He's truly a big fan of the C300).. Sam explained that for the green screen shots on XXIT, they chose to use the uncompressed output of the C300 rather than introducing any compression artifacts from recording to the CF card. Based on this information I've conduced this simple test, comparing the two acquisition options from the camera.. The C300 produced very crisp clean footage that any compositor would have no problem keying, but the uncompressed footage really shines as it avoids the compression pass.. We'll be using this method to complete a number of upcoming commercials and VFX based TV promos. ( I'm adding a link to a higher quality 1080 HD clip for your review and comparison)
