An international team of researchers that includes an astronomer at Tennessee State University has discovered a new planet outside our solar system—a “hot Saturn.” Unlike the planet discovered by the team in 1999, which was a gaseous planet, this one has a solid core and may show how Earth-like planets are formed.
“This is the first time we’ve been able to establish that there is a planet outside our solar system with a solid core,” said Greg Henry, astronomer at Tennessee State University. “Searching for it was like looking for a needle in a haystack, but it was worth the wait, and now we have documentation to analyze and explore further.”
