  • This concept has been done to death and is BORING.

This concept might have been used before but the way it's done here is fare more interesting and poetic than many other things I saw.
you should look at what you've done and be more humble before spitting on other's passionate works...
  • Just my opinion. I think it's funny how everyone's response to anyone is "have a look at your own work before judging others". That's a very ignorant thing to say. So, basically are you saying that people who don't have a portfolio of film work shouldn't even comment on art? That they have no right to an opinion? But because I am an artist, I do have a right to an opinion, but that my work needs to be stronger for me to voice it? Ridiculous to here such things from people.

Some people may love this video. Kudos to them. I have people who hate and love my work. It's all subjective. In my humble opinion, this has been done again and again, and every time there is some kind of poetry. That doesn't change the fact that I have seen this done much better. Je pense que j'ai le droit de m'exprimer quand meme.

    Au fait, j'adore ton travail.

Marty, what hasn't been done before? If you find it boring, then why comment on it?
It's not the most groundbreaking thing done in cinema, but the underwater stuff was very cleanly and well executed, kudos to them!

Part of the problem, Marty, is your superficial and undifferentiated critique. To say something has been done before and that it's boring doesn't really give insight about what you object to aesthetically.
Your point about democratizing critiques is well taken, but is only valid if you offer substance in your criticism, I believe.
For my part, I think the song is engaging and that the "look", especially the underwater treatment is a nice starting point and interesting atmosphere (I also enjoyed the reflections under water). I wish there would be a change in the framing of the face from its 4x6 picture box at some point.
    Cheers!

Maybe if this was "done much better" it wouldn't had this awesome result. Love the process that was used. Really good man.

  • Everyone has their opinion. for those who liked this, i understand why. it's just not my cup of tea, and yes everything has been done before. but when there is some kind of gimmick involved (and gimmick isn't necessarily a bad thing like many people tend to think) the ability to compare with similar work is easier to do. The gimmick here is using photos and stop motion. youtube.com/watch?v=wbP0c9TZfzM

It's been done, but that in its own right doesn't make it bad. this is by no means a bad video. Just comparatively, I have seen smoother and more cohesive examples (see the link I attached above) I personally didn't see a huge reason for the underwater stuff. I'm not sure how it propelled the poetry of the music to the next level.

Anyway, we all have the right to critique with or without justification. People get so bent out of shape as soon as someone says something negative in a forum like this. But that is the beauty of forums and artforms of any kind. The ability to enjoy, not enjoy, compare, find something original, appreciate something similar, whatever...

Great Job! The under water footage was enticing. Keep up the exploration!

'This concept has been done to death and is BORING'... sounds to me like someone trying to provoke a reaction and doesn't appear to be constructive in any way, and the caps just add to the provocation. I'm guessing if you provoke a reaction with an irrational statement, chances are you'll get some irrational responses, so don't be too surprised. Nice to see you expanded on that statement a little afterwards though.

'I think it's funny how everyone's response to anyone is "have a look at your own work before judging others". That's a very ignorant thing to say'....so basically everyone apart from Marty Martin is ignorant?
Someone take Marty to space (man).

Personally, I don't think anyone here sounded bent out of shape, they were just voicing their own opinions, no? I think too many people get bent out of shape when they are unable to understand something, which to me is ignorant. You don't understand the reason for the underwater stuff and you're not sure how it propelled the poetry of the music, hence your original rash statement. If it was smoother and more cohesive would that make it better?

I think the dark(ish) start works really well with the bass. The colours and choppy animation when the beat kicks in match the melody perfectly. I can't see how a smooth animation would work here (or with any Brakes song in fact). Just out of interest, did you like the song Marty?

Beautifully shot. Though I wanted the camera to pull back so we could see more of the landscape, as it looks bounteous and jungular. Yeah - that's a word.
