1. "Simply Surround Yourself" demonstration from CES 2009
2 years ago
The Zoom H2 and H4n make two "stereo" pair of files. What are you going to use to playback these files, or hear them in surround? Answer: Immersive Media Research made a player and encoder that will allow you to preview your zoom recordings immediately. With or with out a surround sound card or interface! We also take the guess work of having to MIX this ODD pair into USABLE formats: DTS 5.1 for any home theater, ImmersiveStereo (virtual surround) for playback in mobile audio playback in stunning 3D audio, and 6 Channel AIF or WAV for export to other programs. SIMPLE, PRACTICAL, and only $29.95!

This is a demonstration of how easy it is to produce surround sound in DTS 5.1, MP3 Surround, or Virtual Surround using the Zoom H2 recorder and the Vortex Zoom Encoder software.

    This is confusing at best...
pick .wav to get an .mp3?
Why not 6 channel discrete .wav's?
Probably more useful from an editor's point of view.

Rusty, FYI you can have n interleaved .WAV or .AIF files making a 6 channel interleaved file. That is what the .WAV or AIF button on VZE accomplishes.

The freely downloadable MP3 Surround Encoder accepts a 6 Channel .WAV 44.1/16 file on the PC and the Mac version a 6 Channel Interleaved .AIF

Don't like the file order in an "interleaved" 6 channel file, use IMR's Vortex Surround Encoder and "unglue" or de-interleave that file and swap or add channels.

By the way, heaven help you if you just want to play a 6 channel AIF or WAV in many DAW's. IMR's Designer has PLAYMIX, can sequence as many 6 channel players as your processor and interface can handle.

Feel free to contact me for any further questions.
    Respectfully,
    Terry (at) VortexSurround.com

Zoom makes great hardware, and the Zoom H2 captures a 360 audio image with astonishing realism.

However, consumers were challenged as to how to playback two stereo files simultaneously. IMR with years of making software for surround sound modified their existing Surround encoder to make the Zoom encoder.

With the Zoom Encoder the user drags the "Front" file to the top input window, and the "Rear" to the bottom input window.

VZE does the rest sending the users stereo or multichannel sound card the right signal, to the correct speaker so the playback is as accurate and true a representation as your playback system will allow.

Did Zoom inform registered H2 owners about this during the pre-release period? I only got to know about this.. well.. a year later.

Zoom has been very gracious to put a link to the Zoom Encoder on their website: zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/
IMR included a flyer in 120,000 H2 and H4n boxes, unfortunately the response on the flyer was lower than 1%. Worse than direct mail! Thank you to the 1,000's that have purchased the Vortex Zoom Encoder.

I listened to this thru headphones & had no panning or surround effect whatsoever. Sounded like a mono file with variation in volume only. I could not tell the difference between any of the mixed down modes either. Am I missing something? Surely I should have had a panning effect in my headphones?
  • Terry Maedche 1 year ago
There was no attempt to create a surround effect, this was purely a demonstration of "how to" use the software and what each button did.

Great suggestion to add content that supports the capabilities.
    Thanks,
    Terry
