60. Grading "Return to Dungeness" with Magic Bullet Looks

Made for RGTV. Here is a look at the kind of things I did using Red Giant Software's Magic Bullet Looks whilst grading my short film "Return to Dungeness"

I hope it is informative, it runs at 27 minutes. It barely scratches the surface of Magic Bullet Looks. But I will be going into much more detail in later videos. This will hopefully give you a better understanding of the software.

You can the finished short film "Return to Dungeness" here: philipbloom.co.uk/films/35mm-films/return-to-dungeness/

Thanxs for sharing, I'm learning a lot from some of you guys on Vimeo...I'm waiting for my Imac and then want to give a go to some more serious filming. Until now I mended pictures together (:>)

Do you know if Grading is also possible in Final Cut Express?

Thanks for sharing! I've been keeping up with your videos, and enjoy them.

I know this may be a little off topic, but I was wondering if you could share your specs on the Mac Pro you're using (I'm assuming it's a pro). Thanks!
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
did it on a macbook pro, new 17" but used my old macbook pros too. I have a Mac Pro. Which is quad core 8gb, with an Aja Kona and 30" and 24" monitors.

phil this is great. i thought i knew everything about this software, but i never knew about the "slideshow" feature to see all the presets! thanks!

just one question that nobody asked yet (and off topic of course), how did you do the screen record for this tutorial? and the zooms to focus attention to different areas of the computer screen?

i promise i will credit you when i steal this idea for my own site!!!

when watching vimeo full screen, the hd web vid translates so well, like you have taken control on my own desktop!

    see you at nab!

Wow, great piece! I use MBL a lot and thought I had a pretty good handle on things but this showed me a lot of other great options!

One thing however, once the webcam section is done, the tutorial audio is panned all the way to theleft. I only had one headphone in and couldn't hear it initially. I guess you recorded mono on a stereo input and it went all the way to the left. Just FYI. Probably won't be a problem for most people but just so you're aware.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
Yeah sorry about that Matthew. It's going to be Mono on the podcast and RGTV site.

Being a huge Philip Bloom fan, I was really inspired by his very interesing video about color grading with Magic Bullit and vignetting in FCP. Although I used Vegas Movie Studio instead, and no Magic Bullet, and my camera is very low budget (Canon md101/zr800) and SD, I'm really pleased with the looks of this video. For the music, I used some loops from a free 8pack.

Philip, what do you do to avoid artifacts using color grading tools? I seem to get a lot of digital artifacts like blocking when I grade my footage.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
what are you shooting with Tracey? Is it HDV?
  • DSLRcinema plus 2 years ago
I am using both the Canon XHA1 and 5D MKII. I notice it on the MKII the most but I do upres to prores with the MKII clips but maybe there is still not enough information for heavier color grading.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
yeah that is problem with HDV, it's hard to grade as you get blockiness. Also Canon is low bit rate so same problem.

Hi Philip. How far can you push this software before it wouldnt be classed as broadcast safe colouring? I take it what you have done in this video must be as you said it was for RGTV. Thanks Tom.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
Hi Tom, as long as the image stays intact and you put a broadcaste safe filter over it you will be fine. RGTV is a web based outfit.
  •
  • Jacob Keeton 2 years ago
I'm really impressed Philip. I watch a lot of these tutorials but yours was especially cool to me because of the side by side film at the end. I usually find that adding effects tends to destroy a lot of visual information but the grading and extra color contrast actually adds specific visual data for the eye. I'll look forward to future videos.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
Thanks Jacob. It's my first attempt at a tutorial. Glad you liked it! Phil

weird it is working for sure in England. It is also on XR if still fails.
    exposureroom.com/library/tutorials/view.aspx/22/
  • rickflick 2 years ago
I still get the sad face. The XR works though, so thanks. It's really a nice tutorial. Technique is good. I'm quite interested in a grading tool. Are there others on the market you've looked at?
Also, do you get commission from some of these vendors? Just curious. It would make sense if you did.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
weird! i have used color a little but love the ease of MBL. They contacted me as I talked about their software so much so became an affiliate. People get 20% off my Bloom20 code and I get some money to help run my site. I also have a similar, much smaller deal with LetusDirect and Editor Keys. Don't get much but every little bit helps. All products I rate highly so I don't feel like a prostitute for promoting them!
  • rickflick 2 years ago
Fair enough. Your a good enough salesman to do well at it I would think. Thanks for all you do to promote video. As a beginner, I need all the help I can get. 8-)

Great job Phil, Dont know if you mentioned it before, but I always run a second video timeline of the origional edited project in VEGAS on top or underneath the MBL FX timeline. It works ideal to reduce some xtrm MBL FX shots by pulling down the dissolve value line!

Phil, from argentina, how much percent or amount destructive for video signal MBL is? I'm workin on dvcam rigth now, so, I need to know this before purchase MBL. Thxs a lot, great approach to try define memories!
  • Carlos 2 years ago

Hello, I hate to bother you with this question that im sure you answered somewhere down the line, but do you have any clue to if MBL works well and without problems on fce4? I am aware the MBL website says it doesnt, but i have seen some videos and read about how it does work with fce4. I just need to know for sure, before spending the money ! Thanks

Thanks for this Philip - very helpful - like a typical 'dude' I've been stumbling thru Magic Bullet often doing more harm than good. This will allow me to still avoid reading the instructions!

Have appreciated your opinions on gear the last year or so - not to mention your sweet freakin' imagery - finally decided I should give credit where credit is due and say your openness is appreciated I'm glad it seems to be paying off for you in the types of gigs (shooting & speaking) you are getting recently, you deserve it.
