Amazing work, well done! Very good for a no-budget film! In my opinion, this is the most important work ever done with the HV20/30 series of consumer cameras! The HV series are very popular in the music video business (more than 220 *official* music videos shot so far with these cameras), but this is a different animal.

    Some constructive criticism though:
    1. Most of the scenes that nothing happens are a bit too long. If this was a regular TV episode or movie it would have been much more trimmed down. Now, you can argue that this is not TV/cinema, but same rules apply as the internet population is even less patient than TV audience. The intro "TV interview" was too long as well and the actress needed more speed and speech punch to deliver the "news". Overall, I think that this 15:10 video should have been edited at around 12:00 ideally.
    2. Many scenes feel "bare" because of the lack of background music. Some scenes do have music, but some other scenes require some too.
    3. The audio levels are still low IMHO. Especially when Sean talks to his friend at work at around 13:00.

Overall, this is the best thing I have ever seen coming out of these cams, and for that budget in general! Congrats! Keep it coming!

I just blogged about it btw. Also, thank you for exporting in MP4 and not in MOV, so we can download the file and watch it on our HDTV via the PS3/XBoX360!
  • Josh Minogue 7 months ago
How exactly do you view videos through your PS3 that are downloaded from here?
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 7 months ago
You either play them directly or copy them to the internal drive via a USB key or SD card, or a CD. Or, you install a UPnP server and have the file on your PC while it's streaming to your PS3/XBoX360 via the home network.

    Thanks so much guys!

Eugenia - I agree whole heartedly with much of your criticism. There's several things i would change but at this at time we look at condition:human as a learning experience. Sadly, i think in some ways i spread myself thin on the project and it's reflected in some of the 'rough areas'. It's something we'll certainly attempt to rectify in future episodes and projects!

Thanks so much for your support!

Thanks Trent. BTW, I re-watched the episode with my husband tonight in our HDTV via the PS3 and it looked amazingly good in the big screen. :)

First thought this must be EX3 or so! Stunning quality and framing. Real study stuff for film schools!

Nice story, very well done. I'm surprised you're using consumer camera. Maybe these days, consumer are as good as professional ones:)
Are you guys from Vancouver Art School?

    Thanks so much everyone!

Janusz - Kristian attended VFS for film production I think. But no we're not affiliated with them now. It's a good school from what I've heard though ;)

Really like where this is going! Agree with some of Eugenia's points, but overall I can see this becoming a very popular series. Very nice work.

Somehow I couldn't stand to watch it at the computer - so I also copied it to USB stick and watched it via XBOX on my big TV. There it worked really good.

The lack of real backgrounds adds to the feeling of emptyness and superficiality, a little bit like the world of Equilibrium. For Blade Runner there is not enough trash and rain. ;)

I'm looking forward to Episode 2!

I watched this video all the way through without fast forwarding. It is good work! Some constructive feedback: I agree with Eugenia Loli-Queru, specifically that some of the none dialog scenes are too long. I think they need to be shorter and have better music to help us "fall into the mood of the film". I look forward to the next episode - thanks for posting !

Hey steve, I'd love to cast you as a "Our Man Flint" update. You look like James Corburn. Know any Jeet Kune Do?

EXCUSE ME!!! Was this shot with a canon HV30? OMG! Is this true? The virtual sets were excellent, giving me ideas to consider more blue/green screening.

Where can I get production notes for this project?
  •
  • condition:human 7 months ago
    Thanks everyone!

Perry - it was shot with an HV30. There's a tutorial on binarycrumbs.com as to how one of the train shots was made! Other than that there are a few behind the scenes videos around.

    Inspiring and compulsive viewing.

I admire the attention to the details, the good looking cast and the overall cinematic delivery.

In other words - I'm hooked!

    Very well done indeed.

I'm inclined to disagree with the comments saying it is too slow. The temptation in films is always to speed things up but I like the relaxed pace. It allows the viewer to take in everything. The environment, the speech, the music.

    Keep us waiting, I say.

Can't wait till the next episode. Well, actually, I can. That's part of the enjoyment!

    Hey everyone,

Unfortunately episode 2 will be slightly delayed as there was some computer problems that stopped me from getting the ep completed on schedule. We'll get it out there as soon as possible and we intend to keep our schedule with all future episodes (hopefully no further problems occur).

Hey awsome work, can't wait for the second episode! It really is a beautiful piece to look at. The effects are great and there are some interesting shots in there. Keep it up.

On a side note, the video was a bit pixely in the dark areas so i wanted to download the video and watch on my tv or something, but I can't seem to get the link to work. Can anyone help me out? Appreciate it

Sorry again for the delay everyone! Episode 2 is complete and will be out Sunday April 19th!

AMAZING! Can you shine some more info on what hardware/software you used and how long did this all take?
  • condition:human 7 months ago
    Thanks so much everyone!

    Marco - thanks!

    Hardware:
We used a canon HV30 to shoot it. Our greenscreen consists of two pieces of felt from a local fabric store (they are 4 yards long 6 feet wide). For lights we have 5 worklights (flourescent) from canadian tire (kinda like target). We also use a homemade dolly with skateboard wheels and PVC pipe unfortunately we only have 10' of pipe and we shoot in my living room so we can't move much.

    Software:
Everything in post is done in after effects CS3 aside from the creation of CG backdrops which is done in 3d Studio Max. I then use Premiere to cut it together. Sound is mixed in Premiere :( Soundtrack is recorded in Garage Band.

If you have any other questions feel free to drop me some mail!

I agree with Andrew Wilson. The Pace is really wonderfully relaxed. The story builds up its own suspension and doesn't need any background.

    Great Work!

  • Hexydes 4 months ago
I'm going to expand on what Eugenia said, and it isn't even so much music, but a lack of sound period. You need ambient noise, like the air conditioner running in the apartment, wind blowing, traffic in the background, etc. Additional background music would add to that as well, but it sounds like the world is inside of a sound booth. :)

Other than that, fantastic work! Looks great, top-notch production!
