Monsters, freaks, weirdos and oddballs live among us. Introduced to painting and drawing through skateboarding and the visual world connected to this scene, Johan Potma’s characters live in a world where the ugly and the weirdos are not misfits but the majority of society.
As a strong blend of youth culture, art and the underground world, Johan Potma is an innovative and inspiring artist whose paintings carry not only a story but also represent a piece of history. The materials and techniques Johan Potma uses tell part of the story through the stains, old nails, dents and cracks of discarded box lids, cigarrette boxes and blocks of wood from other times.
Originally from Holland, Johan Potma currently lives and works in Berlin and some of his clients include Playboy, Nickelodeon, Pepsi, XXS, sixfeet, Titus Skateboarding and Nivea and his illustrations have been featured in Luerzer's Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide (2007, 2008, 2009,2010,2011), The Upset (Die Gestalten Verlag), Freistil and Communication Arts.
Find Johan Potma and his strange but endearing fantasy creatures every Sunday at the Boxhagener Platz flea market, at the his own studio Cheese Mountain Tragedy in Kreuzberg, Zozoville Gallery and the Onkel Zozo Gallery in Berlin, Germany.
