Religious paintings and their iconography interest me. While the intent behind these paintings was to portray religious stories or myths, they are often charged with eroticism, depicting moments of ecstasy and a heightened sense of being. The compositions are full of sensual fabrics and flesh while the looks in people’s faces appear almost orgasmic.
Not only do the stories or the myths behind these paintings interest me, but also the artist’s lives, their models and their patrons are intriguing as the wives, lovers, patrons are often inserted into these depictions.
I’ve created this series of tableaus through video and photography putting a twist on things with age, gender, sexuality and culture to grab the viewer. Drawing on references from film, history and culture, I’m using photography and video theatrically with odd unexpected relationships to retell stories and deconstruct art, and the way it has been done before.
