It has been a loooong day... Took me 4 hours to finally rig the Stedicam Merlin onto the 5DMKII with kit lens (tried the 50mm 1.4 but it didn't want to balance - too light and too wide instead of long is my guess...)

There are about 7 adjusting points on the rig, each of which can enhance or totally mess up your balance. Here is the final setup with weights:

Use the M hole for best result with the 24-105 f4 kit lens!

This is my first ever Stedicam footage so don't be too harsh! I have a lot to learn and still need to make some more tweaks to make the rig balance even better...

P.S. Garrett Brown is a genius and a legend in my honest opinion! You HAVE to listen to this interview with Garrett from my good friends at FreshDV: freshdv.com/2008/09/freshdv-podcast-interview-with-garrett-brown.html

I'm going to give my arm a rest now... Been holding the rig for the past 8 hours. I might do some lessons learned from the setup in the near future...

As always, please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!

Great first outing with a Steadicam! And, as you know, the balancing is the hardest part. I might have to try one of those Merlins

Hey Tyler, thanks for the shots. I just used the Mark II on a steadicam as well, I still see a bit of flickering artifacts on steadicam as well as when I pan with a tripod, any trick to get rid of these flickers??? thanks pierre

Canon has informed me to use UDMA cards only which I am not currently doing. A good card to use although expensive is the Sandisk 16GB Extreme IV UDMA!

Was the camera easy to keep steady while focusing the lens?

You can't focus with a merlin. It will throw the balance off. Best practice is to shoot wide with say a 24-105 f4. F4 at 24mm will give you almost no DOF.

I like the move starting at 0:50 the most. The actual movement in the beginning getting close to the face is good too, but needs more light!

Tyler, was the 24mm the focal lenght you were using?

Cool! Setting up with Merlin Stablizer does take times but it does produce an awesome result like yours and some of my videos shot at Moab. How many weight lead screw do you need at the bottom of stabilizer to work with 5DMKII? Mine is 2 plus curved end and I can't even handle anything heavier than that for a minute!
