Thanks for the demo; it must be hard to manually focus the camera when mounted on the Merlin, is it ?
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 8 months ago
Thanks Jim, yeah, you pretty much have to prefocus it before each shot...

Thanks for putting this together! Great job and saved me the hassle of showing a tutorial myself :)

I haven't tried my Merlin with my week old 5D II yet. But after seeing this and hole N and the three weights, I'll give it a whirl this weekend. Thanks.

Also, how do you compress your videos? What parameters? They are some of the most beautiful looking, artifact free videos I've seen. Great job!
  • Steve Henry plus 8 months ago
Oh can I ask you what picture style you use? And what sharpening level. Your work really does impress me! Thanks.
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 8 months ago
Hi Steve, thank you very much. I'm editing in FCP and I output using compressor, h264, 720x1280, 30p....
I've used the "landscape" style once but usually I just resort to the "neutral" style and default sharpening level. Thanks again!

thanks for the video, man. i've been having trouble balancing mine with the same 24mm.

which quick-release plate exactly are you using?

    thanks!
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 8 months ago
Hey Tom, thanks for the comment! I use the bogen 577 quick release assembly, and I position the plate so that the gold spring loaded pin on the sliding plate is just in front of the camera touching the camera body.
On the plate adapter I use the 2nd, more forward, threaded hole to mount to the Merlin base plate--hope that helps!

Did all the weights come with the camera
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 7 months ago
Yes, all the extra weights come with the Merlin and you can use whatever you need depending on the weight of the camera.

thanks for the demo. i've been trying out the canon 5d mark two and i was wondering if there are any codec exporting tricks. my footage seemed jumpy once in final cut. i have the latest mac pro towers and edit HDV footage all the time. for some reason the footage seems to stutter? when i watch it in the camera it does fine? what kind of flash cards did use while shooting in video? i thought maybe if i re-formated the footage it might help? any helpful tips?
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 6 months ago
before I start editing I use compressor and export all files as ProRes 422--the file sizes are large but then the editing goes much smoother and you don't have to re-render transitions, etc.

What focal length do you use on the merlin ?
and how are you dealing with the focus ?
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 1 month ago
mostly the 24mm--you just have to focus and then try to keep the same distance to the subject.

Thanks for the video. I just bought the steadicam and trying it with the 5D mark II. Seems like I am somewhat off balance when it's moving although it seems aligned when I hold it straight. I guess I just have to work on it.
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 1 month ago
If it swings slowly when you're moving and then stop, it might be a bit bottom heavy....
