The video is loading and I'm already typing here telling you how much it rocks... :) Keep it up man.

PS: I loved the snow landscapes, you should do more of this, you have lots of deserts on your résumé already.

Badass, as usual... I'm liking the added motion... the super smooth dolly moves are always great. Great job! Super clean!

Wow Tom. Makes me sad I sold my 5D2. What a timelapse season you had, lukily it's timelapse season year round.

I think you just blew Reverie out of the water.
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
Haha, thanks, Joey. I have a lot of respect for Vincent.

freaking unreal! The moving shots starting at 3:18 are insane! How did you pull those shots off? I imagine thats not video right?
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
    it's timelapse ;)
  • Olix 5 months ago
Did you shoot from your car? What was the shutter speed? Thanks! :))
    I'm impressed.

    OOh, I see.. below.

This is really inspiring Tom; I agree, those moving shots were off the scale. However you pulled those off, is genius. Keep 'em coming!

  • Hey Tom, how long do you expect to get out of the MkII shutter? Have you ever used a G10 for timelapse?

Brilliant stuff. I too liked the shots on the road. I'd love to know how that was done.
I thought the soundtrack was appropriate also.
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
The night driving stuff was shot at f/1.4 @ ISO 6400, with like 1/2s exposures. The 5D2 is so fast, I can actually hand hold it for star shots. I use a simple suction mount that goes onto the body of the car or the windshield.
  • Jimmy Swift 7 months ago
For the driving shoots, your saying you would just stop take a picture and move again? Cause i imagine that you would get blurred shots moving in a car at 1/2s?
  • UsfProd 7 months ago
It looks like you use a railroad for these ones.. crazy.. i was wondering if the sensation wouldn't be even greater with more moving objects in the background.. like clouds or shadows.. great sequence !
  • Matt Bieber 7 months ago
Ditto on trying to understand the driving shots....I've got students trying to figure it out.....they cant get over the lack of motion blur...and frankly neither can I

    Great, great work!
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 7 months ago
Sorry to ask if this has already been answered...but are you shooting stills with the 5D or video?
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
The night driving stuff is still. All the night stuff is stills. Only a handful of shots were done in 1080/30p video mode on the 5D2 - the birds at Salton Sea, boy fishing, surfers with oil rig.
  • iamkalaniprince plus 24 days ago
Oh Yeah !, i'm gonna have to try this with my new addiction thanks to YOU Tom... Quick question.. Will the 5D2 keep shooting @ 1/2 sec ? Are you using Jpeg small fine ?

Much love, Your stuff inspires me to spend my Maui nights alone.., in the dark,.. freezing cold,.. with just my thoughts, and... click............................................click.........................................................click.......................! Thanks Tom ! I can't wait for my Milapse magizmo..!

  •
  • edvard brun 7 months ago
Tom, your silhouettes are great -- and you have a gift for exposure. Was some of this work HDR ? I can hardly wait to get out into the high desert after seeing this. I'm wondering if the radio telescopes were in Socorro, NM ?
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
no HDR. no composites or anything. it's just straight out of the camera.

yes, a couple of those shots were at the VLA near Socorro/Magdelena. it was incredibly windy there, so i was limited in my shooting. i'm hoping to go back in late may. new mexico and that whole area are beautiful. the VLA is a place i have been wanting to visit for ages, ever since i saw Contact.

Tom, what lenses did you use with the 5D Mark II?
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
This is almost entirely the EF 24mm f/1.4.

I'm getting the Nikon 14-24 soon. Can't wait to shoot with that monster on the 5D2. I have an EOS adapter for it now.

    Amazing!

I'm particularly impressed with the time-lapse of stars that appear to be in daylight.

I'm assuming these are taken at dusk, dawn and/or under moonlight and it's the long exposure times that are brighting up the environment to these bight levels? Would that be right?

Tom you need a timelapse motor to control the zoom on the lens.

Imagine the hitchcock dolly-zoom effect in timelapse on a great landscape or rock or whatever...

    That would be crazy... haha.
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 7 months ago
haha.. actually, that's pretty crazy to imagine! one of the guys on my forum actually built a zoom controller for timelapse. that would be a really complicated setup! but possibly very epic!! ha.

Oh! Stunning! So beautiful! I have one question, what is primary feature for 5DMKII, since it is first DSLR and 1080P recording is secondary, but I have seen people are using more this camera for video, not for still! I have seen so many stunning videos by 5DMKII, and I guess now we do not need any separate cameras one for video and one for still. Those days have gone or what, when separate cameras were have been must!

And now more and more company will do same, like Nikon D90 also do nice movie!

Just have one Canon 5DMKII and you are set to go!
