Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo - Teaser

The adhan, or call to prayer, is recited by a muezzin from the minaret of a mosque five times a day, summoning Muslims to prayer. One muezzin begins the call, another joins moments later from another mosque, and then another, until the echoing of the diverse voices envelops the whole city. This a cappella harmony creates a wave of sound transforming the chaotic cacophony of Cairo. Although the history of the adhan dates back to the seventh century, there is virtually no documentation of the tradition.
