A solo show at SLC's Barbara Walters Gallery. Show titled "Chasing the Moon" consists of 3 parts: 3 digital images, a participatory video and sound installation and a single-channel video.
Since the mid-90's, astronaut has being characterized in my work as the metaphorical construct of a dislocated, artificial and transplanted subject. My own childhood experience in Taiwan watching the concurrent historical events taken place in 1969-space landing on the moon and the war in Vietnam-planted the creative seed. Other inspirations are Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, goldfish, David Bowie and Pink Floyd, X-Files, Twilight Zone, Chinese Philosophy, Los Angeles and everyday cross-cultural experiences.
The feelings of isolation, vulnerability and uncertainty shaped by uncontrollable events in everyday existence are often used as point of departure to construct and explore the psychological and philosophical journey of a dislocated and out of control astronaut floating in space in a state of indeterminacy.
"Home-Land": a participatory video and sound installation
In this experiential, connected and erratic setting where future and progress symbolized by the astronaut is incessantly being challenged and re-defined by competition, war, displacement, and the unsettled past, placing the subject and the viewers in a state of indeterminacy. Rocking chairs with For Sale signs symbolizes threats from the housing crisis swaying the viewers to-and-fro between comfort and insecurity, stability and uncertainty, home and land, here and there, past and future.
