Another world under water also literally for videographers! A struggle with current and reflections on the LCD in the special housing. This is one of the smallest and cheapest housings to film in HD! Fit for 150 feet deep! And outside ring for extra wide angle! More info on the Epoque underwaterhousing for Xacti 1000, 1010 and 2000 on global-dvc.org/Xacti%20HD1010.asp. Music specially composed by Herman Steyn (Johannesburg)

very nice setup. I prefer as wide as possible when shooting underwater. I have the HC3 with underwater case, but its not wide enough. Most of the wide angle lenses don't fit inside the case, so i found a clip on wide angle that fits, but the quality is not that good and makes the edges of the video bury, epically in low light where the aperture is more open. here is what i used: bhphotovideo.com/c/product/219744-REG/Raynox_QC_707_QC_707_27_37mm_Insta_Wide_Wide.html

it was the only thing that would fit inside the underwater case for the HC3. I have the Sony Sports Marine Pack.

I found something that works better, but its not HD... i started using my Canon SD870 camera in video mode. It takes really good SD footage. i can fit 2 hours on a 16gb card, no artifacts, and very very good video. (maybe i'll post some of it). Anyway, i got the underwater case for it, and everything works great. I have a nice wide angle built into the camera. the only down side to it is that there is no ported sound mic on the case (not really a big problem while under water) and its not HD. But... i think because the SD quality is so good, i prefer it over the HC3 setup. And, its much MUCH smaller.

Thank you Steveo, that is why this one is so nice with the outside 67mm ring for a wide angle lens which I also used on my Xacti with some adapter rings and it worked great very good quality but a bit heavy. Like to see your shots!

what's the best way to link my video with this thread? I'll just paste it here. vimeo.com/4062141 This is my underwater test shot with canon SD870 and underwater case. (video is SD 30p)

I've had good experiences using the canon sd630 with it's underwater case. The size is great and they now make similar cameras that do shoot HD. Here's something shot entirely with that little sd630 vimeo.com/725510

Watch out for the current Jan! I love the sound of underwater video, something about the crackling hissing sound is interesting to me. Maybe you could fashion a hood for two sides of the LCD, I'm not sure how you would attach the pieces but there has to be some way.

In those circumstances? Hard to attach something on it or some metal cover? .... Anyway we cant dive here in Holland in warm water!

This inspired me to look for something for my HV30 - I wonder what's out there...

    I love your videos!!
  • Jan van der Meer plus 8 months ago
Thank you Dan, just buy a round polarizer filter, not expensive and you'll be more happy with the results!
  • Dan Huston plus 8 months ago
hey thanks - I have a circular polarizer but what about something for under water?

    :-)

Hi again, Jan. Good little video. In answer to your e-mail, it is nigh on impossible to film steady footage at the surface, except in the calmest of conditions. You will have to take up SCUBA, my friend, and go deeper!! The footage that I produce is the result of MUCH editing and MANY hours of practice. Those professional guys with their huge, aluminium housings and lighting rigs have it easy because all that weight is so much easier to control and keep steady. My camera and housing is much bigger than your xacti making it a little easier for me to control, although I have also a different xacti and epoque housing. (My Maldives clip is filmed using this camera). I derived little more than an hours footage out of 2 weeks of daily diving!! I was just beginning to get the hang of keeping it steady when the end of the holiday beckoned!!
    Keep well, Jan.

Wow. Best quality I have ever seen from a consumer camcorder. I have a few questions if you do not mind. Was this video recorded with the HD1010 or the HD2000? Can one expect to get quality this good straight ouf of the camera or was it heavily edited? The reason I ask this question is because a buddy of mine and I are going to start filming for a Fishing Documentary and would love to get the quality you are getting in this video and are concerned about water damage to the equipment. Would you say the HD1010 produces better visual quality than the HD2000? I sort of noticed that it does in the videos that are posted to vimeo. Please reply at your earliest convenience and also please provide a direct link to the housing and where I can purchase it. Thank you very much. your videos are amazing and I hope to see more of your expertise on this site. I can also be reached at americanpridebt@gmail.com
