Looking at why tuition rises, I spoke to Mark Spiro, the vice president of the financial department at Hampshire College. He spoke to be about a number of reasons both internal and external that are contributing to tuition rise. However, I wanted to focus on something a bit more visual, so I chose to look at building depreciation, and in particular the Robert Crown Center. The RCC is slowly degrading but fortunately, the school had decided to renovate parts of it, to make it more sustainable, and save money in the long run. Unfortunately, parts of the operating budget that will allow us to make these renovations come partly from tuition, which of course, must rise before these changes can be made.
