Twidgets 4: Nærøyfjord
"Twidgets" is a home video documenting Kristen and Heather Hagen's vacation to Norway in August, 2008. Twenty-four hours after our hike up Pulpit Rock, we are catching an early morning ferry through the Nærøyfjord: the most scenic arm of the Sognefjord, which can choose to be known as the longest, deepest, or most narrow fjord in the world. It is surrounded by towering precipices, veiling mountain ranges that are higher still. Because the snow melt lasts through the Summer, waterfalls that roar down the cliff sides in April remain a spectacle to behold as late as August.
Before our cruise, we manage a substantial stretch between Pulpit Rock and Gudvangen. It is substantial, not only because of the distance itself, but because of the terrain we cover. We navigate our way through Hardanger's maze of glacier-capped mountains and serpentine fjords, driving through the world's longest tunnels and a most intricate network of highways and ferries. Indeed, a documentary of our trip would not be complete without scenes from the road, exceptionally captured by two Hagens who would rather try their hands at a digital camcorder than a manual transmission. In all, Snow White and her passengers log 1600km (1000 miles) over the course of ten days.
Arriving this particular evening at Gudvangen Camping, we move into the biggest red cabin we can find and treat ourselves to a home-cooked chicken dinner, washed down with a brisk pint of Norwegian Summer lager. Our boat ride the next morning takes us to Kaupanger, which feels like home after lazy days camping on the shore watching the same ferries drift in and out and imagining my sisters and I as the wide-eyed, camera-toting tourists aboard.
Between arriving in Kaupanger and hiking Nigardsbreen in part five, we stop through Sogndal to introduce the Twidgets to some old friends of mine. The camcorder is packed away, but a few pictures are taken, including those added below.
