We made a big six day boattrip by PeramaTours from Bali to Lombok west, by bus to east Lombok and from there by boat to Sumbawa, Satonda, Donggo, Moyo, Komodo, Rinca, Flores. Real nice passengers group, loads of fun and great group of sailor/boatsmen. Filmed (most) in 25P with new Sony HDR-FX1000 + Formatt 4x4 Polarizer in Vocas MatteBox. Underwater with Sanyo Xacti HD1010 in Epoque underwaterhousing + Wide angle. Music specially composed by Vimian Herman Steyn (Johannesburg)

We sure were lucky regarding this latest news!

BREAKING NEWS by CNN:
An Indonesian fisherman has been killed by Komodo dragons March 24 2009 (just a week after our visit). He was attacked while trespassing in search of fruit, officials said. Muhamad Anwar, 32, bled to death on his way to hospital after being mauled by the reptiles at Loh Sriaya, in eastern Indonesia's Komodo National Park, the park's general manager Fransiskus Harum told CNN. "The fisherman was inside the park when he went looking for sugar-apples. Other fisherman took Anwar to a clinic on nearby Flores Island, east of Bali, but he was declared dead on arrival, he added. Komodo dragons, the world's heaviest lizards, can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length and have a toxic bite that they use to kill prey such as buffalo, returning to feast when the animal succumbs to the poison.

Despite their ungainly appearance, the carnivorous reptiles can run as fast as a dog in short bursts, jump up on their hind legs, and kill animals with a blow of their powerful tails.

Attacks on humans are rare, but this incident is the latest in a series in which the monster lizards -- which have forked tongues and fearsome claws --have killed or injured people.

Last month a park ranger survived after a Komodo dragon climbed the ladder into his hut and savaged his hand and foot. In 2007 an eight-year-old boy died after being mauled.

Conservationists have run into criticism by some local villagers who accuse environmentalists of protecting Komodo dragons at the expense of human safety!

Very nice report Jan! Well made and good music.
I edited similar footage for a world sailing friend a long time ago: nothing seems to have changed over time. Specialy liked the Komodo dragons with their mortal bite due to their bacterial infected mouth. I see you survived :) Great stuff!

My favourite scene is the smiling woman, following the indonesian kids.
They always go crazy for a camera and make everyone laugh. You captured this moment perfectly!!

Thanks so much Alex, Vimeo Staff member Daniel Hayek loved that moment also! We got a very special relation with these passengers you're all on this small sailboat on a large ocean and in the evenings on a small island BBQ and singing together and linedancing also! I even got several photo's with these mysterious orbs on it! (Think they are flies eyes reflecting but soem Guru's call them spirits from people!) Look on YouTube for Guru Ratu Bagus we met him in Bali in his Ashram near Besakih temple!

    Dear Jan Van Der Meer,

It is alway to good to see over few times if the film is well made. Funny, we will find what we missed out at first and it reviews with other ways to see it as well.
So one same film can have many different comment by the same person over peoride of time.
I watch the movie long time ago and my comprehanshion at the time was very good. Later in life I watch the movie I love. It was a okay because yes all the excitement is there but no story.
Viseversa, movie I did not like in the pass become my favorite. I thought at the time it was a boring but many years later, it become very intresting movie.
It is always good to watch again and again. Specially made with concern and wonderful sharing reason's involve. Like your film.

I did not see this at first few times I watched but it revealed. Your film stop there so we could read it.
    STAFF
    A FRIEND & ASSISTANT

    On back of staff's shirt.
What a wonderful spirit to share we all are friends to help one another in this world.
What a comforting to share and to know there are friends in this world to be a friend.
    What a intelligion. Emotional Intelligion.
I prase time and time again about Emotional Intelligion.
We can be intelligion without heart. Can't see others.
They likely fail with friendship and family and themselve's in this world.
Talent without emotiional intelligion is too dry.
Most likely person with consideration for other in this world will be success in everything they do.
Because they truly care. The truth will open many doors to open heart. The kindness for one another will open many doors for many hearts. The real friendship will open door for many hearts.

My 2nd Cd is almost ready.
One song is " YOU CAN FAKE IT! BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE IT"
Sincerety is that important to us to be truly happy in this life.
Because of my sincerety to other's, I don't have to watch my back anymore.
Once I was a crook, a lier to cover and to be one of society creation. I did not liked my lies. So I constantly develope myself as a truth. Finally after 5 years of teach myself good and motivate good, than I was ready to come to the world and face my community with totally different way. My life become wonderful each moment. Each moment was brand new.
I can write books based on my experience but better not here : )

    Jan Van Der Meer,
I truly respect you. Through your life and film, you share the most important things with your friends in this world. Also so energetic. Your spirit is full of loving and giving energy. That is the reason why our friends are drawn to you. The true power will come and shining through love and giving.
When we try to receive only, we will not be happy never.
Have to give to receive to be balanced. Like you.
Great film to share and so peaceful and gave us reason to work hard and honestly so we could all go to Bali and Bali dance with our other spiritual friends in this world.
Your film coverd all the life story. Sky, ocean, children, man, woman,
under the water, animal's, wind, jouney, rest, work, friends, meeting and good byes, earth, nature, food...
You include millon beauties of our life and it came out like a magic.
    Peaceful.
    Wonderfully peaceful.
Thank you very much Jan Van Der Meer for being our friends and it is our blessing to have you around.
    I knew I was blessed : )

    Jan,
I have often said that you are the greatest travelogue videographer, bar none. You induce in the watcher a great empathy for the lands and people that you film, and that is a very rare talent and ability. It is obvious that your lens loves the places you visit every bit as much as you do. Long may you continue.

Love your work. The polarizer filter gives a nice colour saturation, which reminds me of Kodachrome when I used to shoot slides (now all digital). Tell me about audio on the FX1000. Do you use the built-in mic? I'm using a Sony PD170 with Sennheiser ME66. The decision now is whether to go with the FX1000 and a BeachTek adapter or the Z5U for another $1400CAD.
  • Jan van der Meer plus 4 months ago
