Soul vocalist Avery Sunshine has been making waves on the indie music scene. Her latest single “Ugly Part of Me” is over nine minutes long and is being played in its entirety on dozens of radio stations all over the world. Avery’s new self-titled disc is a hit with fans and generating a lot of new fans by the week. Her soulful based style of music reminds me of vocalist Anita Baker in the 1980’s as she brings elements of the church, jazz, and soul as she delivers it in her live and intimate performances. Avery’s live shows are a real experience and is something I highly recommend checking out.

The Chester, Pennsylvania native began studying classical piano with her aunt when she was 7. Music was always in her parents house and the church is where she got most of her most important roots as a performer while growing up. Upon graduating high school she attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, where she still resides, to pursue her career in music. In the early 1990’s Atlanta was a hotbed of music and many acts and artists like Arrested Development, Dionne Farris, Toni Braxton, Goodie Mob, Outkast, and TLC were making waves on both the R & B and pop charts. Avery loved the vibe so much that she decided to make her roots down there. She formed a duo with one of her best friend from college Maia Wilson, currently in the Broadway musical “Book of Mormon,” named Daisy Rew.

For over a decade Avery has paid her dues and has been featured on the “Fighting Temptations” Soundtrack and in 2007 vocalist Jennifer Holiday hired her to be the choral director for the revival Broadway play “Dreamgirls.”

The name Avery Sunshine derived from two film characters: Shug Avery from “The Color Purple” and Sunshine from the Eddie Murphy comedy “Harlem Nights.”

Currently she’s signed to Dome Records in the UK and her self-titled disc is released on her own Big Shine record label.

Avery is about to embark on her summer tour and dates will be coming in the near future. To order her latest disc and to find out her upcoming dates please visit her on the web at
