An Antique French Boiserie Panel Painting in the style of Louis XVI. Good Antique Condition commensurate with age – water damage to left border, tack marks where the frame of the paneling would have covered it – Late 1800’s or Older.
This magnificent French boiserie panel painting depicts a young woman on the shore of a body of water. Behind her is a thatched shelter probably for reading or resting. She is supporting herself against an overhanging tree trunk , looking towards a dove carrying a love letter to her. On the bank is a flower basket filled with roses and her beribboned hat. A contented lamb in repose watches as her small dog jumps towards the bird in flight. The framed scene is painted in a trompe l’oeil technique. The oval frame appears to be raised above a rectangular background with garlands of ivy at the top, supported at the corners by a gold tie back knob. This décor is in the Louis XVI style.
This peaceful painting was once tacked onto a panel of a framed wooden paneled room . There was probably another similar painting which tied into this theme inserted into another panel. When these painted panels were removed from the paneled rooms, they were often framed very simply with moldings. Today, it is left up to the new owner to frame them as they wish.
