The United States Peace Index (USPI), produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, ranks 50 states and 61 city areas according to their peacefulness. The 2012USPI is the second annual edition of the index which measures peacefulness according to five indicators: the number of homicides, number of violent crimes, the incarceration rate, number of police employees and the availability of small arms.
According to the 2012 USPI, the U.S. is more peaceful now than at any other time over the last twenty years; since 1991 there has been a substantial and sustained reduction in direct violence across the United States.
