Anna Maria Ortese, the author of "The Tree," was an early magic realist. ("The Tree" was first published, in Italy, in 1958; "One Hundred Years of Solitude," a landmark in the genre, was published in 1967.) Too little of her work is available in English. Much of what we do have is the result of Henry Martin's fine translations--"The Tree" is one of them.
I made this clip as a way of getting closer to Ortese's compelling story. If it persuades others to seek out her work, that would be a good thing, too. (The faint music behind the reading is Andrea Piazza’s "Valzer Per Siglinda.")
