Inspired by the Slit Scan videos here on Vimeo, this is my first attempt using After Effects' Time Displacement effect. It's a bit chunky on the edges. I think this could be resolved with a much slower rotation or faster frame rate but my lo-tech studio limits me to a combination of 25fps and 33rpm. Having discovered this effect, I'm excited by its potential and will be experimenting further.

Music: Lessivé by Le Tone (maybe it's not Lessivé but it's at the end of that track on Le Tone's Le Petit Nabab album)

I've always wanted to learn how to do slit scan effect. Is it pretty simple to figure out in After Effects?
  • AdamPellinDeeve 2 years ago
Yes, I just worked it out today. This Time Displacement effect is reacting to the layer underneath it that's a static grad from white at the top of the screen to black at the bottom. The lighter the area, the futher ahead in time. In this case it increases from 0 to 4 seconds then back to 0 again.

"Oh another use for those turntables!"
Very cool Adam, I like the "warble" in the glass!
  • AdamPellinDeeve 2 years ago
The warble does look nice. It wasn't supposed to be there but the weight of the figure gave the glass a slight angle. I've just completed a further test with this effect which I'll be uploading in a bit.

The first 10-seconds of this made me feel nauseous at first because when it started to displace my brain was like, "Warning: This is unnatural" and I became confused as to how such magic was being produced. It's weird how when something happens that kind of steps out of the bounds of reality, sometimes the reaction can be visceral like it just was for me.

That was a very cool effect, good work.

By the way, none of my comment was supposed to be mean, i hope it doesn't read that way. I just got freaked out, like I saw a miracle or something.

That doesn't sound mean. That reaction is the intended result of making effects like this. I'm delighted with the nausea you felt and my new goal is to upload a video that will make you pass out.

    Thanks for the comment.

cool! I just started experimenting with slitscan style effects in After Effects, too. Was looking all over for some sort of software or plugin then suddenly realized that the Time Displacement effect was what I needed. Looking forward to more of your experiments.
