This is a video describing my 2012 SciFund Challenge project. The project focuses on fire in the Amazon forests where questions have been raised about the viability of certain tree species that do not have adaptations to fire and that have the potential to be beaten out by other species that do have such adaptations. One species that has developed some adaptations is silver bay (Ocotea guianensis), found in the southeastern Brazilian Amazon. I hope to raise money to take my first trip to the Amazon to attend the ATBC 2012 annual meeting and start a small project studying the adaptations of silver bay. This project will most likely be the basis for my Masters thesis that I will be starting at Penn State University this coming August.
