Also, is that the Lilys or My Bloody Valentine in the background? Either way, it made it super Erick, and very fitting.
  • Erick C. 10 months ago
yeah the Lilys from "Eccsame the Photon Band." best winter album ever made.

I was raised Catholic so I had to keep myself from reciting the creed along with everyone! This is truly inspirational. I want to make some vids like this!
  • Erick C. 10 months ago
wow, thanks andrea. inspiration is something i often lack so that's a great complement. i was hoping ex-Catholics would dig this. i included the link to the creed cause every time i say it i find it to be some very wicked and weird shit to say out loud along with a bunch of strangers.

cool as hell - almost makes me forget how much I hated going to church (and will not to this day)

If church was as trippy as this growing up then maybe I'd still be a practicing Catholic. ;)

It's the time when the priest actually said that he hated gays is what sealed the deal. I walked out of mass right after he said that. I was trying to come up with some kind of argument, like I would walk right back in and tell this guy off. But to be honest what good would have that done in THAT community. 98% of the people in church that day and every other day went there out of habit not on faith. Why would they give a fuck.

Anyways cool vid. The fog reminded me of the people's minds. The fish, the "herd" trapped with no where to go. The girl looks like my friend Maria who's name is the same as the Virgin Herself (no offense if your friend is/isn't a virgin). The guy, reminded me of how I felt during every single second in church. And that you filmed it from below is probably where I'll be going, to hell.

Yeah right. Like I believe in that shite.
  • Erick C. 10 months ago
wow Ian, great analysis. yeah, church can be really wack sometimes. the one i currently go to is at my old college so most of the priests are progressive professors (Jesuits) and know better than to talk shit about gays on a university campus in LA. also probably cause some of them are gay themselves. ;)

I liked the crossfade transitioning. Very nice feel with the music alongside.

I also really like how you really take your time to set the mood. Those first 40 seconds really feel and look like church. Fidgeting feet, the restlessness you get from sitting on a wooden bench, stewing in mild guilt, but gaining strength and hope at the same time.

The transition is so good, like the Wizard of Oz. You recede into your thoughts, starting foggy, then fishy, and eventually becoming more and more specific as you spin around with a nice young lady, and finally a playful image of a close friend goofing around on the floor, but at the same time, almost signifying some sort of resurrection.

Say what you will about church, Im not a frequenter myself, but here i see that it's a nice place for you to be congregated with your thoughts, and it's a pretty place to be. Well done.

I think this also shows how much video/vimeo means to you, as you captured all these meaningful things on your camera as they were happening...

ive watched this video a few times already, and im moved everytime. the timing of the transitions is just right. the clips were all so different, but together they really worked. i found myself drawn into each scene. oh and the music choice...perfect. lovely job, erick.

Did you get permission to film in the church? I doubt they would have noticed since your camera is on the floor, but just curious.
  • Erick C. 10 months ago
i didnt ask for permission. i used my small point and shoot and kept it on the DL.

i started thinking about video just a while ago. i work in photojournalism and began wondering about things moving, from time to time...

i joined vimeo because it seemed to be the best place to get inspired.
and this video is just what i wanted to find. this is what i would like to be able to do one day.

    amazingly beautiful.
  • Erick C. 10 months ago
thanks maique! Vimeo for me is also about inspiration and there's a lot of it around to be found.

this is so simple, Erick, and yet so beautifully elegant. The long transitions are absolutely perfect- you just did such a beautiful job translating the daydream world into video. I love the goldfish- they are my favorite part!

nicely done my friend. cool to see how many different takes there are on it. some latch onto negative feelings about the church, religion, etc. others associate it with positive stuff.

much like a great song, the listener/viewer gets to feel like it's been personalized just for them.

    a tip o the cap.

I love this. I feel that faith is very much about both the spiritual and the physical world, so your montage was really strong for me in expressing that idea. Well done.

pretty rad stuff. the shot from under the church pew is great. mass would definitely be more interesting if it were from that point of view. Might be rad to listen to a whole sermon while watching peoples feet move.
