Complete spinal cord injury patients lost control of their legs. The researchers measure motor cortex activity of attempted foot movements using Near-InfraRed Spectroscopy. Finally, they will study the possibilities to control external locomotor devices with these signals.
Why this video?
BrainGain is a Dutch research consortium that researches and develops neurotechnologies. Research topics include for example Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), neurostimulation (eg. Deep Brain Stimulation) and neurofeedback. braingain.nl
On 18-20 December 2011 BrainGain held its annual meeting at the University of Maastricht (the Netherlands). The focus of this year's meeting was value creation and communication to patient organisations and industry.
One highlight of the meeting was the competition of the BiG talks. Our idea was that BiG Talks should be the opposite of small talk. BiG talk = to-the-point communication of a clear, facilitating and enabling message in 3 minutes. The BiG talks forced us to reflect on the essential and most interesting aspects of our research. The most persuasive speakers were rewarded with a prize.
