Thanks Matthew, I did some CC in Premiere CS3, mostly brightness, contrast and saturation.

Great stuff Roland! Your awesome work is making me seriously rethink getting a D90. It has its limitations, but you seem to have more than mastered them...I just hope with a LOT of practice I can come close to your standard. Keep up the excellent work! :)

your stuff always looks great! what are your settings.. my footage does not look as good as yours. any tips would be great!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 7 months ago
Thanks Bradford, I don't use any specials settings... the camera is often on default settings, I make sure, before locking exposure: AE-L (hold), to be satisfied with what I see in Liveview... in low light situation I drop the exposure compensation to -0.3 or -0.7 that's all. Some CC in Premiere CS3.
  • bradford youngs 7 months ago
Thanks for the tips, but still loos so dark in live mode... what mode do you shoot on? Auto? Lens? All you do is drop the exposure? I did that and it looks dark and when I adjust the settings I see no diff. Please Please help me>>>
  • bradford youngs 7 months ago
I have seen you mention a program.... camera pro 2? what is that about?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 7 months ago
I don't know if you already did but check those threads at dvxuser:

    dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1461660&postcount=15

    dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=146661

you will find some useful information, the first one is good for low light situation and the other one is great for general information about the D90, hope it helps.
  • bradford youngs 7 months ago
you rock!!! The settings from camera pro, are those what you have your camera set at? What lens do you recommend? 50mm? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get my footage to look as good as possible.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 7 months ago
I used those settings for low light situation, 50mm f1.4 is great for low light, its more like trial and error, you will eventually find the right setting for your needs.
  • bradford youngs 7 months ago
when you shoot do you shoot AUTO, A, M????? Do you think because I m using IMOVIE that it might not make my footage look as good as it should. I know cameras but this damn 90 is driving me crazy. I never got into still photography except when I first got into film 22 years ago. I TRULY BELIEVE THE 90 CAN AND WILL MAKE SOME AMAZING FILMS oops sorry about the caps. All you need to do is record sound sep which you would anyway if you were making a short.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 7 months ago
Most of the time I use A mode...
I don't know about IMovie, I have great result with Premiere CS3...
  • bradford youngs 7 months ago
    roland,

was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how you get the look you get with the 90. Go over how you shoot, lenes, settings you deal with, how you import you footage to you editing program, do you import to IPHOTO then to premiere, I know I have to import to IPHOTO first the drag it over. Show the footage before you CC the hell out of it. Go over how you CC for those of us who know very little. Then show the final shot. Maybe do an indoor and outdoor shot.

I bet it would be your highist rated film to date... just a thought.

I already in a process of making another version... :) I did assemble it after viewing some clips.

    Bonjour Roland,

I love your D90 work, and I'm trying to figure out why I don't get the same results with my D90. Most of my footage looks like it has a "film" over it - it's generally low-contrast, washed out and not as sharp as yours. I use a 50/1.8 and 18-55/3.5-5.6, but I don't think they're the problem. What settings do you usually use?

    Thanks!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 7 months ago
    Thanks Adam,

For my settings, look at my answer to Bradford Youngs. I often adjust contrast in Premiere CS3 :)

hi, i want to import my D90 videos into Adobe Premiere Pro, but I got "Unsupported format" error.
Do you know how to fix this? I'm using a Mac.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 7 months ago
You probably need a motion jpeg codec, like this one free-codecs.com/Motion_JPEG_Codec_download.htm

I don't know if its compatible with your operating system, I'm not familiar with Mac.

Hey, Great job!! Love the nat lighting. I own an EX3
and a Nikon D200, so with all my lenses I have the
D90 looks very promising. Is this at 24p and how long
can you record on a 16 gig card? Does the camera
hold up as a full project cam? I like not having to piss
my money away on over priced and "camzilla" sized
35mm adaptors such as Letus. Again, great work!!!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 6 months ago

Hello im about to get a D90 and I was just wondering if you think its a good investment??? I work with both photography and video so do you think this would be appropriate for me? and what lens would you recommend, thank you if you read this and sorry for all the questions. Beautiful video, love the colors.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
If your main objective is photography... than the D90 is a great choice, for video its not so easy to master... but check my last two clip; vimeo.com/5226497 vimeo.com/5264787 they were made with the new panasonic GH1 a better camera for video. Good luck making a decision :)

Roland, for your steadicam, can you tell me what the distance from the platform to the weights on the bottom were? How much weight did you use on the bottom? Also, did you center the camera in the center of the platform, or, did you offset it to the left to account for the battery weight? I built a stabilizer, but, I am having a difficult time getting the balance down.

Beautiful as usual. You had a knack of getting great footage out of the Nikon D90 and the new Panasonic looks good but for now my budget only allows me with the D90.

Guys I have had the D90 for less than a year and it has become my camera of choice for making music videos and docos for Youtube. I find it fairly easy to work with and I only use the kit lens as that is all I have.

I also use Sony Vegas and have got colour correction tips and other post production tips. Have a look at my latest videos and I am always happy to help as far as the D90 is concerned.

One tip, export using Windows wmv file as it doesn't darken the footage unlike mp4 which does.

Look forward to your next videos.

Hi Roland, kind of a bit late since you replaced your D90. But I'm a bit curious anyhow. I built a steadicam much like the one that KFLeung used, but using it with the D90 seems like its a bit unbalanced. It seems like its due to the grip/battery side of the camera. So while the steadicam still works fine, the unbalance causes a bit of lean to the right, making it horizontally unbalanced. How did you workaround this when you were using the D90?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 2 months ago
For horizontal balancing I move the bottom part of the steadicam to the left (1:24 from KFleug video) until its perfectly balance.

Now i'm confused. I set off this morning looking for an upgrade on my D70 and decided the D90 was a good move as I could get fantastic video to boot. Now compared with the GH1 I'm not so sure!! What did you find limmiting with the D90?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 2 months ago
    Everything... I prefer the GH1.
