Part Two: vimeo.com/4305102

A community gathering together to welcome spring.
Music by Brian Eno and J. Ralph

I'm currently trying to find funding for a new project about seeing the world through the eyes of an autistic 9-year-old girl as she watches her family rip apart because of her disability. It's a very hard-hitting topic for me and a lot of other people, and I hope to present it with a decent budget. We are planning to shoot this Thanksgiving season, and anything would help! My paypal account is writingmatthew@hotmail.com If you can loan equipment, locations, props, etc, that would be much appreciated, too! Thank you!

    Great work! 3 ? 4 ya=)
What camera, camera stabilizer and video software did/do you use?
  •
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Hey Paul, thank you! It was shot with the HV30 and edited with Sony Vegas. There isn't a stabilizer. Just moving my body around like I'm doing tai chi, haha.
  • Paul Wong plus 7 months ago
    thx =)
  • Hfour 7 months ago
I do the same thing! I move the camera with my body and legs instead of with my arms when I'm shooting freehand!
  •
  • Eric Buist 7 months ago
wow. that was very well done.
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
    Thank you, Eric!
  •
  • Eric Johnson 7 months ago
Wow, I love the motion. That's impressive for doing it all hand-held. I have an HF100 and i use sony vegas and I can never get it that smooth.
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Thanks, Eric! I was hanging out of a car window for some of the shots, though, haha.
  •
  • Allister Reynolds 7 months ago
Amazing! All those colours! Well done and Brian Eno is the shiznat.
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Haha, I actually have never heard of Brian Eno until I came across that awesome song. The second song I fell in love with when I heard it in the trailer for Doubt. Thanks for checking the video out man!

very nice editing matthew. great cuts to the beats and i loved the change in tempo and mood. i have just changed from pinnacle to vegas. steep learing curve!
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Thank you Gerald! I've never used Pinnacle. How was it? I hope you're enjoying Vegas.
  • Gerald P Cox plus 7 months ago
matthew, pinnacle is very easy to use but on loading it to my new computer found that after having had it for 2 years none of the add ons i have purchased work [aparently that's the deal with pinnacle] was going to upgrade to pinnacle studion 12 plus but having read some recdent user comments was hesitant] am percevearing with vegas which i am coming to really apreciate, but i am having to learn its not so easy functionality. and i am anjoying the learning because of the results i can see.

  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
I wish I dreamed like this! I've never been to a place where a bunch of cherry blossoms were blooming, and it was very magical. Plus, I got to see my community coming together which was the best part.

Just for movies like this, I come back to VIMEO from time to time. Not for crazy and nervous compositions.
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
I'm glad that my video is one of those ones that makes you come back!
  •
  • Frederic Vercammen plus 7 months ago

Really beautiful video. The loveliness of Spring really comes out well. It wasn't clear to me why you had the footage play backwards most of the time. Can you explain?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
It makes me feel like I rewound time a bit in order to have these memories end at the beginning...so it's kind of like that haven't happened yet. It's just so I feel like it's not over, haha. I love constant change, but certain videos I have play backwards when I had a great time shooting them. I did the same thing with my New York video. I loved it so much that I rewound the footage to the beginning in a gesture that I might get to experience it again. I hope this makes sense, haha. It's hard for me to explain. Thank you for the nice comment!
  • Michael Dunbar 7 months ago
Very interesting point. Thanks for informing me. :)
  •
  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
Great video Matthew, hopefully one day I can post process like that!
  • Mitchell LeBlanc plus 7 months ago
Oh, and were you using any lens adapters?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Thank you, Mitchell! It's just the naked camera. I had the camera almost always zoomed in a bit with manual focus on to get the shallow depth of field.

Extraordinary colors and scenes you've captured! I loved that you even put in the artist painting in the park, the ducks, the various flowers, the egg hunt, people going backwards..the volkswagon. Totally kept me watching. My sister is on Bainbridge Island.. I'll have to send her the link to see this, though not sure where exactly you filmed.. Kudos!
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
It was mostly shot at the University of Washington campus in Seattle. Thanks for checking it out!
  • Bliss7 7 months ago
Thanks.. I'll resend it and let my sister know where you filmed. She'll love those trees!! Just gorgeous.. lucky you! They take the ferry back and forth to Seattle all the time and my bro-in-law works at Microsoft so commutes every day.. Love your vid!!

amazing stuff. that seems like such a great camera.
did you do any color correcting?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
The camera is pretty average. There's a lot going on in post, haha. Thanks for the compliment!
  •
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
Really good Matthew, shows what you can with a simple camera like the HV30 in the right hands. Great edit. I was going to do a backwards film shortly, damnit!
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Haha, thanks so much, Philip. I hope the title of my video didn't throw you off, haha. I actually did a backwards video last Christmas time when I went to New York for the first time. I have a huge fascination with the reverse. Thank you for the comment! I really appreciate it man!
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
Really great colour work by the way!

Very nice job, man! Just wondering, did you slow down the speed of these shots in post or is everything the way you shot it?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
The slow motion is in post.

  •
  • LupusF15 7 months ago
great video...on the slow motion shots, how much did you slow it down?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Thank you, Jon. I'm not sure how much I slowed it down. Just enough not to ghost it. There isn't a number amount on my "slow down function". I just tested a few speeds to see which ones wouldn't ghost.
  •
  • John Mallory 7 months ago
great video...was there color correction done or a specific lens?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
There was definitely color correction. I wish I had a lens adapter, but unfortunately don't. Thanks, John!
  •
  • Alejandro Riano plus 7 months ago
Very nice Matew!!! 2 Question? What extension use to correct the color and where or who is the nice music?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Thank you, Alejandro! I'm not sure what you mean by extension, and the names of the musicians who did the music are in the description.

very very nice, my sony HVR V1u can get similar quality but around what f stop do you keep your camera?
  • Matthew Brown plus 7 months ago
Thank you, man. I think for this video it was just at 2.8
I wish I had it at a higher setting because I feel like things were a little too light for my taste, haha, but I guess it went along with the spring feel to leave it at 2.8
  •
  • Kathy Ashe 7 months ago
That was beautiful and so well done. I loved the backward effect. And the setting was outstanding. Job well done!
