I just don't understand the human need to gawk in traffic. Is it so hard to just keep your eyes on the road and drive on by? It's always safer for everyone if you keep moving.

Seriously, it's a car or a fender bender or a tow truck or a police officer. Please, look forward and drive - let's all just let it go.

    hahahah!

    hahahhahahah!

Exactly. The stupidest thing in the world. I don't get why rubber necking doesn't fail to happen. AND you know everyone feels the same way. "KEEP MOVING!!!!!!"

There needs to be some kind of cloaking device that hides the crash scene so no one knows. Or

    PEOPLE COULD JUST WAKE UP!

    rad video.

I'm still laughing, so well done, and so true. I lived there for a long time. But it happens everywhere...
  • Eric Anderson 9 months ago
Thanks nshack - it was fun to make. Was sitting in traffic and my camera was right there, so...

"looks like some douche bag ran off the road...cuz it was wet"

hahah, harsh. i was worried at the end when you gunned it that you were gonna smash into someone. you're by temecula right? is this the 15 near there? i went to high school in murrieta.

one time when i was driving in la there was an accident on the other side of the freeway, but it was hidden by one of those high dividers that sometimes come along. all you could see was a big pillar of black smoke, the wall was seriously 15 feet high. this car in the furthest left lane slowed almost completely to a stop to look at the wall and smoke as it passed. i was like WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! THIS IS LOS ANGELES, ARE YOU INSANE!?! DONT STOP MOVING!!!! NEVER STOP MOVING!
  • Eric Anderson 9 months ago
    Exactly! Keep moving people!

Yep, the 15 goes right through Temecula and Murrietta.

I'm not so sure rubbernecking always creates this phenomenon. An alternative explanation could be that when the accident happened, everyone just behind it (on both sides of the road) slowed down or even stopped briefly for their own safety and also to see if any assistance was needed. Also, a driver passing an accident scene should probably slow down to make the area a little less hazardous for the emergency service workers. Slowing down in both these cases on a road where I would imagine people are driving too fast and too close together will cause each driver to have to slow a little more than the car it’s following and eventually this slinky effect will force everyone on that stretch to come to a brief halt.

Even if this theory isn’t true, in a situation you're unable to control, it could relax you to imagine it is.

    Or maybe it’s rubbernecking.

All valid points Adam. But seriously, it's rubbernecking.

it's not just california. is everywhere! 11 mile commute takes me an hour sometimes.

and the best part is... traffic moves right after you pass the accident.

Human nature... what can we do? Nothing, really - I made a video :)

Great commentary, you should be a voice actor... you've got the humour without the 'cheesiness'. p.s. Doesn't the sound of windscreen wipers seem ever so present when you're sitting in traffic?
  • Eric Anderson 8 months ago
Thanks Ill, I appreciate the props. "Funny sans queso" is what I am all about. Now that you mention it, I am pretty sure it was the sound of nothing but wipers that drove me to grab the camera. BBBRPPP, eeee, BBBRPP, eee, BBRRP, eee.

I know! As a fellow CA driver I gotta wonder what happens when it rains, or is foggy! WTF! Like we've all never experienced WEATHER.
  • Eric Anderson 6 months ago
People just go bonkers... happened this morning too. It was misting, of course, that means everyone must travel at 45mph in a 65. grr.

As if gawkers need an excuse to gawk, right? This is still one of the most frustrating things ever.

Brings to mind one of my favorite quotes: "A _person_ can be smart, _people_ are stupid"
